I've always wondered whats the widest tyres you can fit to standard 16" cupra rims?

As standard they come with 195/45/16's (i think), can you stick on 205/45/16's or 205/40/16's, (or something similar), giving a larger footprint with smaller side wall to retain the standard rolling radius but more grip?

And would putting 205's or 215's be far too wide for the rims?

My front tyres are starting to wear down and if possible i'd like to get more grip. I have Goodyear Eagle GSD3's on at the moment, and they are good, but more grip would be good.

If you could find some 205/40/16s these would fit fine and keep gearing but the wheels are not very wide so you may find the tyres rolling around a bit on the rim which would actually worsen handling. I would just find some tyres in the original size that offer more grip.

It's funny you should ask this, when I first started tuning cars back in the day (bluddy 'ell, I'm only 28), it was all about fat tyres...nowadays it seems to be all about trying to get thinner tyres onto the rims, to get that 'euro roller skate' look. To be fair to them, it does look cool when the tyre wall goes in a bit, and a lot of them also do it to prevent as much arch rubbing as possible...it does improve handling though as well, less wall flex, but if I lost it, I would be scared of the tyre coming off the rim, or air escaping from the tyre 'cos it's so stretched. Since I've never heard of an incident of this though, I've got to assume it isn't a problem...to answer your original post though, it's not wise to go 'as wide as you can', it wouldn't do the handling any good...

rules of thumb ive used is

rim width (6" in this case) x 25.4 (convert to mm) +50mm = max tyre width

edited 'cos i forgot the 50mm, and to make mik look silly :p

So a 205/45/16 or 205/40/16 would be fine on the rim?

195/45/16 RR of 6ft (standard) ~ £66.20 GSD3
205/45/16 RR of 6.09ft (slightly more) ~ £78.30 GSD3
205/40/16 RR of 5.88ft (slightly less) @ cant find any decent tyres in thiz size

are the older toldedo rims just wider than the normal cupra ones then?

someoe at work has one with the same wheels, but wider tyres
