I bought a air box from ebay the other day so i could smooth it out and add a bigger intake hose (didnt want to damage the original box) But over the weekend i noticed my original box has an extra pipe on it? Looked at some air box mods people have done on here and no one seems to have it? Anyone know what it for? Thanks guys!!

Do i need it? The new air box i got dont have it. How come i dont see it on other boxes? Thanks for the reply!!

What is the purpose of the secondary air pump?

What does the pipe do, suck freshly-filtered air from airbox or pump air in it?

My questions aren't pointless, I'll change my airbox for a performance intake in the near future, and what held me was the need to find an intake tube which could be drilled and in which the pipe should be screwed

~Thank you,

Nautilus

You need to find the other end of it really - it looks like it could be a breather for the head - whirring pistons build up pressure, and this needs to escape so it doesn't go pop.
The air usually has a decent quantity of oil in it which is why manufacturers direct it back through the engine ... or some people fit oil catch tanks (with little filters on the top) ;)

A search on "Secondary Air Pump" will reveal a huge wealth of information...

I repeat, the pipe is an air intake. If you're not plugging it into an airbox, pop a little filter on the end of it.

I will try and mod my new airbox so i can fit the pipe to it, If that is where it was in the first place that is where i want it to end up! By the way DPJ your car sounds awsome, i hurd a sound clip on a blueflame thread. I cant get the money for one on the group buy at the mo so will have to pay full price later in the year. How much will a Turbo Back cost me??

Thank you, it really does sound awesome when you hit the load pedal. (But it kept getting drowned out by a fire spitting IHI Ibiza last night :D )

I wouldn't have thought you'd pay more than £550.

ah fair enough. there was a black one at the RR day at westec last month, and that thing was LOUD and stupidly quick too, not as quick as my mates scooby but then again that IHI wasnt running right

thought it could have been that black one thats all

With regards to that little pipe, you can buy little filters to fit for less than £10, you might need a reducer or a bit of silicone hosing to fit it. Its quicker and easier than modding an air box,
i bought one when i bought my new air filter

I want to do the work over the bank holiday weekend, I have a 80mm intake hose and a smoothed airbox to fit plus this pipe we are talking about, If i cant mod the box where can i get a small filter from? im in norwich, there isnt much around here in the line of car mod shops.

small filters usually come from the likes of k&n or green, or some brand similar.
You might be lucky to find a halfords stocking them, but i doubt it.

As DPJ has been saying - you really need to put a filter on the end of it if it's not in the original airbox.
