The engine coolant temp sensor? I've read it's the sensor that is black that should be replaced with a green one. Also while we're on the subject, does anyone know the part number for the replacement sensor?

Is this it...

Glad to hear it mate, is it a quick job?

Need to pick up a new seal as the stealers didn't tell me i needed one  and maybe some coolant...

Think i'll have to do the same thing, havent checked on vag.com but topped up the coolant and the light/beep is still going.
If it was just the coolant would it need the codes cleared or should it go off automatically?

its nowt to do beep on the coolant mate...

thats the sensor in the bottle thats causing that...try scrapping it with a screwdriver mate.....

the one we are talking about is the engine coolant sensor, only shows up in vag.com i think or something an engine light (rarely)

Mike, had this problem a while back on my missus Golf. Theres 2 wire rods in the header tank that run in a groove. One of them had popped out of the groove which was casuing her 'low coolant' alarm to stay on.

Failing that, i think the whole header tank with sensor is only about £10 from the dealers.

Well............, the car overheated, temp went sky high and steam came out from under the bonnet, lifted it up and the water was bone dry, had a 1litre bottle in the car luckily so threw that in and got to a garage and filled it up, just got home and the bottle needed filling again.
Plus theres traces of oil under the tip and i dont know where from, was gonna take a pic but its wet at the moment with water so will have to wait til 2moro.
