i like the idea of a shift light

You don't drive a jap car, your Leon isn't a JDM spec one (if there was such a thing)
There is just no need!

I agree why should you need to be told when is the best time to shift.
Surely you can work that out yourself.

These are one thing i have never understood. on older cars yeah ok theay can be of benefit but new cars no dont see point

When I did the shift light thing on my petrol, I inserted the tach pick-up into pin 11 on the blue connector back on the instrument cluster.
Not directly as in the pic, but via the bunch of wires going into the connector.
