Hi, just bought one of those chrome gear surrounds and can't for the life of me get the original black front part off to fit the new chrome one, it just won't slide off. Changed the rear curved part easily as it just popped off. Does anyone have any tips it just looks odd with just the one part. Sorry if this has been asked a million times. Please Help.

It will just slide to one side,

When i did mine i had to push hard and use a screwdriver to help it along.

Then i slipped and got a gash in my palm...

DONT SLIP WITH THE SCREWDRIVER!!!

just get both thumbs at the side and push it while holding the rest with your other free finger and just push it will come off!

slide old 1 of to the right and locate all lugs in holesof tnew chrome 1 and press in hard and slide left mine wernt too bad?

I'm having the same problem. Some helpful replies on this thread. I thought the chrome rings were a pain, but maybe the gear surround is worse LOL. Cheers...

The front bit is a bit tricky in that the material is situated between the 2 pieces of plastic and therefore doies not let it move easily.

Just have patience and keep checking all around it that nothing has caught as you slide it off.

When you come to put the new one on put a lubricant onto the back off it as if your having trouble getting the old one off getting the new one on is gonna be even harder. (wish I had done this as mine was a pig to get back on).

I still haven't managed to put mine on yet! Gonna have a go this aft I think!

I put a couple of dabs of fairy liquid (other brands are available) on the leather to make it slide easier, worked a treat;)

If you look, I think there is a small 'pip' which locates in one of the slots. If you use a small screwdriver to ease this over the edge of the slot it should move sideways quite easily. This is from memory as I did mine about three years ago in the dark. Not recommended.

I replaced the Two trim parts on my Gear lever recently (for chrome ones).
There is a small plastic lug on the front trim that sits in a small hole on the gear gaitor unit - near the Left edge.

To remove it, you need to wedge your flat bladed screwdriver between the plastic gaitor and the plastic trim you are removing. This will release the plastic lug from the hole it clips into, then simply slide the Trim part to the right i think, and it will slide off. ;)

Fitting the chrome trim on is then very simply. Slide it on, until it sits centrally and you 'feel' the lug fit into the little hole on the end of the gaitor.

The job really does only take 5 minutes to replace both Trims. But thats when you realise how to do it!! It took me almost an hour before i worked it out!

Who needs a Rubics Cube when you own a SEAT Ibiza!!

That's what I was trying to say in the previous post but you explained it a lot better than me. ;)

I don't think anyone has mentioned that to remove the entire gaiter and trim assembly before dismantling it, if you feel through the gaiter at the front there should be two plastic locking pieces. If you pull them up the whole front of the assembly should come away easily. To replace it you leave these locking pieces in the up position until it is in place and then push them down to lock it.
