Rite then, what are the difference between them? Am i asking to much for the only difference to be in the carriers, and the calipers being the same? Or the calipers are totally different between the both. Any information would be geatfully recieved

I have already searched to see if there was an existing topic btw.

Thanks Reian

carriers & pads... unless your original pads are worn a bit.

discs are obviously different

Great stuff, cheers m0rk.

Any one with 256 carriers for sale let me know.

Putting 280s on the back is a no go, as you wont have a mechanical handbrake plus it would big ridiculsly (sp) overbraked.

ronnie you confuse me.
you have a 16v which i presume comes with 280mm set up,and you want 256mm to go on?

256 pads IIRC are slightly thicker than 280's this allowed vw to use the same pad backing when going to 280mm but not put as much "meat" on the pad.As 280 discs are a few MM thicker than 256's.
you may need to check the caliper slider bolt is the right one for the disc/pad,totally unsure about this as i got a full 280 set up when i changed.i am just thinking the slider bolts may be longer than one another:shrug:

m0rk,WeeJase...

The problem is that i use the car for road rallying and i use a knoblie type of tyre. I intially sourced some 15s, just big enough to go over the 280s. But because of the tall profile yokohama 035 tyres they wouldnt even fit on the rear, and the gearing was crap with them on the front. So other than geting a lower diff, i will have to go back to 256 brakes with 14s on. Something i dont really want to do but, 256s wernt that bad in the braking department if i remember correctly, but the 8v wanst as fast as well.

Unless you guys could suggest another answer?

Thanks Reian
