I can't see from the pics, but have you secured all that wood to the body of the car ?!?

I wouldn't fancy being in an accident in the car, with all that loose wood flying towards the back of my head........ Ouch

Definitely worth securing it all in with a few bolts/brackets.

Why have you done this? I thought the idea was to go lighter. Seems like you have put most of the weight back and sacrified a whole lot of practicality.

I've done it because I can no longer take people in the back as the rear was scraping, and I'm sick of persuading people that I CAN'T take them in my car, so when there are no seats in the back, the KNOW that they can't go there. The point was to go lighter, and believe it or not, the car is still lighter now then it was before. The ply that I'm using is only 6mm thick, so its thick enough to take some weight (luggage), but not thick enough to weight the car down. Even with my stiff ass suspension, the rear of the car is now 15mm higher then it used to be with the sub, box, spare wheel, MDF parcel shelf with FAT 6x9s, seats. So I'm still quite happy at it is lighter

For best results on the sub tho, youll have to seal the box underneath the sub.

The bottom of the "box" inside the frame that I'm making will be sealed.......just give it time

Nothing is secured at the moment as I keep taking the frame and all other bits ab bobs out all the time to measure up other parts. Everything WILL be secured, as the last thing I want is a fat subwoofer flying towards my head. It will be a mix of nails, screws and some heavy duty Velcro.

I have a questione for you lot tho, Do I need a spare wheel and rear seats to pass my MOT. Baring in mind that my seatbelts are still in place, but the seatbelt lock things are hidden???

OK, finally I've got a bit of time to update this thread. Basically its been a nightmare trying to finish this before GTI International, and has put me off building Audio installs for life , but I'm really chuffed with how it all eneded up.

DAY 4

I've spent the day finishing off the spare wheel well box. I had the front side to make and also the botom. 20million cuts and adjustments later, all the sides of the box were finished and fitted perfect. I then used some wood glue and tiny nails to put the box together. Once everything was in one peice, I ran a strip of sealent round all the joins. This is how it looked:

I then ran the wiring inside the box, stuck some wool and duck tape on the spare wheel corner that was sticking inside the box, and put a thin layer of the wool on top of the box frame to provide some extra sound deadening and stop the box from rattling :

This is a slice through shot to show how the top of the box was joined with the top cover with the subwoofer in it, note the wool in the middle layer.

DAY 5

With the box now completed, I was finally able to concentrate on finishing off the the rest of the boot. I removed the seatbelts and seatbelt clips in order to pass the MOT, and as I was doing that, my black carpet cloth had arrived. I finally covered the top layers in the cloth and painted the inside of the Amp cut out black. I know it sounds like a 2 minute job but trust me, it took a good afternoon just to do that.

DAY 6

Now it was the time to sort out the biggest headache of the lot...........securely attaching the amp at exactly the right height and the right place, and I mean millimeters exact. In the end I've used a combination of screwed down block of wood, bonded bits and used heavy duty Velcro to secure everything down. Once again this took pretty much another day to think out, make and do.

DAY 7

And FINALLY, a week after starting this project, I was DONE. I was able to attach the cloth covered sheets of MDF to all the wooden framework and admire the new boot

p.s. I also noticed that because the boot build in much lighter then the previous set up with the rear seats, etc, My car needed a lowering at the rear of further 15mm to compensate for the weight loss.

Excuse the crappy final photos but it was REALLY sunny when I took them. Don't forget to comment and ask questions

No no, you see it was only scraping when I had passengers sitting in the rear. It never scraped when there were only front seat passengers, only when the rear had people in it. Which meant that I was able to lower it back to its previous height, as there was no chance of ever having any rear passengers any more

p.s. full tank of petrol still wont make it scrape
