Venting a tank !

Hi i have a 1.2 seat ibiza .. and i have read that by venting a tank you get more miles to a tank .. at the moment im getting about 250 miles to a full tank i heard venting your tank you can get more then that in half a tank ..

How do i do it .. isit good to do it to your car ?

theres like a little valve sort of thing in the filler neck on the right hand side, that lets the air out so you can get more fuel in.

BUT.... your problem of 250 miles a tank wont help by adding more fuel. I can get 400 miles easily enough from a 1.2, so you either need to remove the lead weight from your shoe or theres something not right with your car.

As above and as you are down at the warmer and flatter end of the country, you should be getting more than us up in the cold (and sometimes hilly) North. I will warn you now that brimming a petrol engine car tank is not wise as it can lead to a wrecked vapour recovery system. This trick is best left to the TDI gang as they do not need to trap as much vapour as the petrol engines.

One thing that you need to do is to refill the tank, until the second or third "click stop", zero the trip meter and then when the tank is nearly empty log the miles and fuel needed to re-fill the tank, that is the only way to work out what your MPG is.

wow i wish i could get 400 out of mine .. like driving sensibly the oher day i put in 20 pounds and got 140 if your saying that .. i should get at least 200 miles out of it .. what do you think the problem could be ?

Average miles per tank for the 1.2 seems to be around 300 on here, anything over is a bonus. I personally average 300

as above, fill tank, zero trip. Run til whenever you want to fill up, i never let it go beneath quarter. Fill up. Log miles and how many litres it takes to fill up. Multiply the litres by 0.22 to convert the figure to gallons, write it down. Now take the miles you logged off your trip and divide by your gallons figure. And there is your average mpg on the fuel you just used.

Methinks if you only get 250 miles from a 1.2, you need to visit a garage or remove the paving slabs in you boot. My Cupra petrol gets roughly 220 from a full tank with mostly in city driving.

Also this is more accurate if you use the same fuel pump to refill, as they can be setup differently

WOW the economy of the 1.2 is really that bad?
I used to get around 500 mile to a tank from my 1.4 Ibiza, 700 from the TDI FR and now get around 350-400 miles from my 2.0TSI A3 though this is a 55L tank (ive just destroyed a set of Potenzas in 5k miles so its driven hard!!)

RE Venting its ok to do it in a petrol if you are doing some substantial milage after filling up but not worth it if the car is going to be sitting with a full tank for a while due to the expansion.

Good work...tis all about sensible use of hte right foot I find, stay off boost around town and the 1.8t can still return reasonable mpg.

i feel ur pain bro. my 1.2 gets like 260, im heavy footed tho so i blame tht, also the heavy alloys and induction kit dont help at all

anyone who is complaining that they cant get, or have to dream of getting 400 miles from a tank from an ibiza 1.2 either has a problem with the car, or a problem with there driving.
I think i have an idea which it is..

To clarify, venting means you can put more fuel in, - it will make no difference to the MPG you achieve.

Personally i dont like to vent, seems silly to vent then complain when some of the fuel potentially is lost via the over flow or via heat expansion. Its good to have an air space in the tank (or filler pipe) for a number of reasons. Its designed that way. so dont do it would be my opinion.

Incidentally, when you are only getting 250 miles to a tankful, how many litres do you then need to put in the fill it up?:

ok so the tank isnt the same size, but i get over 400 miles from a tank in my LCR more often than not.
