I have the FR TDi and love it! :)
I would have the cupra but it costs 3k to insure which is a little bit of a waste of money lol

it does sound quite bad at low speeds and I always feel embarassed around car parks when people stare lol
but when you put your foot down it does have a nice deep growl to it, I don't mind it on the move really, plus you usually have music playing to mask it :)

as said above.. I'd recommend driving both
but remember you will love seeing 65mpg on the motorway lmao!

Thanks.

Its quite hard to find a diesel and petrol cupra near me (Birmingham) the two I've seen are 40 and 80 miles away :(

Not a common car. FR's were temptingly cheaper and sold well. But cupra is well worth the extra.

These are close ish to you? Worth travelling to test them, then wait for perfect one of your engine of choice to show up.

I certainly need to test drive them both before making a decision as it will have to last me at least 3 years although I'm sure there both going to be good in their own way.

I'm ringing up about the petrol one tomorrow :)

Take your time choosing and all that. Make sure they give you a good test. If your not happy with the route, tell them. Some will stick to urban roads so you cant open it up and reveal any wobbles, knocks etc..

spoke to the garage with the petrol cupra and he wouldn't take the girlfriends 53 plate street ka as a aprt ex saying he could only sell it for £3000 although its only done 30k miles and is pretty much mint.

oh well thats one out of the equation!

I would have still tested it, get a feel for it.

its a 160 mile round trip so not really something I want to do for a quick test drive in all honesty.

just spoke to a guy at L.C Seat where they've got a 2007 cupra TDi in with low miles so seeing what they can sort me out.

they might possibly have a petrol one in their being a proper Seat dealer.

If i get a realistic figure for the diesel I will go have a look and take it for a test drive and if its awful they can right that off my list and have a look at a petrol and if thats the same will keep my car for now and see what else takes my fancy.....

i went to the darkside and got a cupra tdi.
After 20mph you cant really hear that its a diesel from inside the car, you just hear the turbo so dont worry about that.

i absolutely LOVE mine, best car ive owned, you wont be disappointed. low down torque is more usable and more fun trust me :)

my mate has the r32. you cant really compare them the golf is in another class really. but, £400 a year to tax, 20mpg and less (lets be honest you'll drive it hard haha), insurance etc etc, the r32 is in a different world cost wise.

Thats the thing although I'm not going to be doing many miles and make a huge saving I will be travelling between Birmingham and Lincoln quite a lot on the motorway where I'm sure the diesel will come in to its own?

I'm also thinking it'll be doing another 20 - 25mpg more than my current car plus £125 per year road tax. it seems a fairly good option and the way things are a fairly high performance diesel should be fairly easy to shift in a few years time now everyones converting to diesels for more of the above reasons.

Just had a phone call about the Cupra tdi and things look a little more promising on that one so will have to wait and see what happens :)

unless you are doing 20k a year, the diesel has no advantages. And thats coming from a Cupra TDi owner

to me though, even the smallest saving is worth while. the tdi is still one hell of a car!

but everyones priorities are likely to be different.

Sorry, you are wrong there,

The diesel does have huge advantages. Around town its a quicker car makes driving in london so much better, you pay half price Tax, you get a lot more mpg thats a fact regardless of whether doing 10 miles or 40000 miles and you also have better residuals on them, 1.8t's drop like a stone as the market in general prefers the cupra Tdi.

I think the only people who can comment are those who have owned both a 1.8T and Tdi,

I would say the 1.8T is fun, its a great engine as anyone knows, it does seem to be limited on tuning as if you look on here most people go to a certain level and then there are very few who push the boundaries and go for huge turbos and uprated internals etc. Obviously its got a lovely noise. As for will a 1.8T destroy an R32, well it may keep with one but its not going to be a night and day difference. The R32 is still a nice unit and as a car as a whole it makes a good prospect, good residuals, cult status and also the 4wd. also one other thing to bear in mind is your comparing a tuned Ibiza against a standard R32, straight away the reliability will be better ont he R32 and also if you tuned the R32 you would be lookign at supercar performance if turbo'd or supercharged. But for me comparing the R32 to an ibiza is like comparing chalk and cheese.

As for the TDi, well you will never get away fromt he fact that its a diesel, its not quiet like some of the newer small capacity diesels or even the BMW lusty v6 diesels. its a common old dirty pd unit. But once on the move you won;t notice it anayway, its just never gonna be fun as a tunnel run car. Oh and its gonna smoke. But in this day and age with fuel creeping up ever closer to 1.20 a litre the tdi makes sense, coupled with the 120 quid tax and your on to a winner, it will hold its value and also you will find that due tot eh torque you will be less likely to spend money modding it. Motorway driving is great and as i was shocked by the cupra tdi is great on track days, i have bunged mine round the ring and it was very capable in stnadrd guise and DIFT used his on countless track days in the UK.
The cupra tdi is the oe to go for if you can push the price as has all the fancy bits already, like brakes, front moutn etc etc.

but to make the decision you need to get out there and test drive both. Your opinion might be unlike anyones on here as choice at the end of the day is a personal thing. Oh and if you can source from SEAT and you will get a years warranty on out of warranty cars, mine has paid for itself already the premium i paid over a private sale car.

If you have the funds for a TDI do it. I got the 1.8T as the Cupra TDI was out of my price range, my 20VT was already revo stage 1 mapped and I do under 10k a year..it does make a nice sound with the miltek exhaust even when going slow.

I think the diesel at the moment is the winner I am a bit of a petrol head but as mention several times the diesel is going to be cheaper to run. Both the cars I've looked at are £10000 so no difference in buying costs. I know servicing is slightly more but I'm sure only slightly. The only thing thats going to be the down is the sound although we use diesel astras as work and they get the t*ts thrashed off them and sound ok and I've spoke to Simon at AMD who has said a complete miltek and sports cat with a re-map is £903 inc vat which would take me in to the 200bhp league and I'm presuming wouldn't really effect re-sale value due to it looking fairly standard and if I want to go one step further add a large turbo for £1250 an be looking at the 225bhp mark.

Thanks for the replies hopefully go for a test drive in this one Friday :)
