Connections are difficult to clean mechanically, because they are well shrouded in the plug. The ones in the sensor can be got at using a slim screwdriver blade. I'd spray both parts of the connector with contact cleaner (Maplin, Toolstation or similar) then push the connector together and apart several times to wipe the contact surfaces together.

Thanks - I have some of that. Should be able to clean the sensor with it still in there. Very concise so wish me luck.

Just drove up the road again with my scanner attached. Must've ran the scan 30 times whilst driving and no codes. It kept wanting to flash up P1281 but then cancelled it; i suspect it was because it hadn't reached operating temp yet so realised it was inaccurate. What was weird was I turned my heating off and it went slowly up to operating temperature almost immediately?! Although it is zero degrees out so it probably would affect it reaching temp if I am trying to run the heater whilst its warming up - thanks again

Could be nothing but my gauge would go up to 90 then whilst driving it would drop to 45, had thermostat changed and kept doing it, it ended up being my hydronic tensioner had gone so cambelt was loose and wasn't turning water pump properly. Hope I haven't worried you, hopefully just an easy fix for you.

Thanks for the heads up on that one; I think you'd mentioned that to me before so I asked my mate. He said was I experiencing a lot of noise in the cam belt area and having running problems and idling issues and was I getting a lot of smoke - apparently it is a sign of the tensioner being being loose and in turn the belt. Did you have any symptoms like that when yours was loose?! I haven't had a look yet at the belt because I didn't have these symptoms and it is a bit of a pain to look at without dismantling the casing if I remember?

I did buy from EBay but my scanner says its working fine so I don't think I got a dud one and they seemed quite a reputable ebayer. I didn't just pick the cheapest seller I read what they had to say about them because I got caught out like that before with a non Bosch MAF and all I achieved was wasting my time - I had heard they can be problematic. Had it thrown up a fault I would have agreed with you.

Have you tried recording the data for the sensor see if it is reading correct temp?

It's beyond me why people buy cheap sensors etc off eBay, for such items that are so crucial to the engine's running. Iirc both the thermostat and Cts sensor are about £40 for the both from tps, why not just buy genuine :s

Mine is from ebay and works fine

I'm with Lee on this one. I don't suspect it as faulty to be honest and made sure. I've bought original parts and they've been faulty before now! I do understand the comment though because cheap is not always best

I've cleaned the reservoir prongs and also the cts sensor connections with contact cleaner this morning. Had a bit of a wait getting the cleaner to evaporate in -3 degrees but was a good chance to check tyres, add screen wash etc! Got a reasonable drive this morning; wish me luck!!! If not fixed the garage can look at it because its beyond me! Thanks to all of you for your help

Weird! So i did my long journey; the first long journey since the new coolant and stat and the car got up to temperature, dithered about up and down between the quarter mark and the 1st line before 90 a few times (like it was settling in) and then stayed at 90.... On both journeys it did the same thing. I don't know whether to be worried or not? The car didn't look like it was overheating in the reservoir - all looked normal. Only real strange thing was after three hours of not driving on the return journey, when I started off and turned on the engine it went to the quarter mark for 10 seconds and then re calibrated itself back to 60 and did its normal thing - perhaps I just need to keep an eye on it?

I was getting bad milage with fuel and was sounding abit lumpy plus obviously the temp gauge before I had it all done. The seat dealership said in all the years they had never seen such a thin belt, had probably 200 miles left before it went ping so was very lucky. Have you had the water pump changed at all?

I would definitely keep an eye on it. As a reference, mine never goes up and then drops before going up again.

It should just rise to 90 as the car is driven and stay there bang on 90. Hopefully it's just recalibrating as you said...

Well It is booked in with the garage on the 10th when I get back from a business trip so I will get them to check it out because I am getting bad mileage and I know when the belt was done but no idea about the water pump and its nothing for them to take a look. Popped out earlier and the temp gauge just dropped after rising to 90 back down to 60.... NOT FIXED ffs! I dispair of it. I will get them to check your theory and look at the cts sensor as well I think; in case it is a dudd after all

Yeah does seem weird so I think it needs monitoring. Please see my last post for an update on this. It hasn't sorted itself out after all... Gonna rescan it again and keep my appointment with the garage still to get it checked out and check my coolant level again, although it was fine this morning still.

Iv got a genuine cts from sere ready to fit......id personaly only buy genuine parts when it comes to sensors etc.....especially as dave at sere does a good deal.

Well I am starting to think I might go that same route. I will see what the garage say. I'm a little unsure of your post, are you offering to sell me one or are you just advising me of a good place to purchase from? I'd be interested in either capacity

Sorry.....didnt realise there was 2 pages, so read the first page then thought id comment. No sorry mines not for sale.....i kerp getting a fault light due to a dodgy cts....but seeing as its common for the sensor / stat to fail i thought id do a bit of research.

Out of interest what does your climate control read? If you press the recirc button then the up arrow(to select top vents) at the same time the screen should read 1.....then press temp up button to read 51 then press recirc button to select 51 it should then read the coolant temp. I think lee69 has a guide on how to do this. Im wondering if you have tried everything else you may have a faulty unit on dash? Possibly moisture from various leaks on these cars such as fuse pannel in scuttle.

I have got a slight crack in my scuttle. He little clear part on there deteriorated so there could be moisture getting in there. I will look at that then and see what it says and see if it remains stable. If it does I will know it is the dash controls. I may get a new sensor anyway as i am doubting the one I got now. The garage put the coolant in so I am not sure what coolant they put in it so don't really want to remove the sensor now because i will have to top it up again and don't know what with
