Anyone been sitting in the car and the engine starts itself unprompted whilst in 'Auto Stop'?

On two occasions I've been parked up whilst the wife has been in shopping, both times the car had switched itself off with 'Auto Stop/Start', got a fright the once and near dropped the mobile, second time it happened the wife just appeared from around a corner and it started up itself, I know its a smart start but c'mon lol

Is it just me? ...or is it time to up the medication

They only last so long on stop start before they start up themselves. Probably due to not draining the battery too far that it then can't start up again...

battery drain, relative temperature, engine temp etc can all make it start up.

Also starts itself if you try and creep forward even the smallest amount! lol

The bloody car is scared of your wife Andy.

Yep, other posters are correct, its to do with electrics. When you think about it, start stop does only stop the engine. The air con and other peripherals will carry on running - and draining your battery. So the car will restart before the engine can no longer start on the remaining juice in the battery. So a nice simple explanation, although Still a little unnerving when you aren't expecting it though!

There are a few other situations in which it will restart itself too - from the manual:

The engine starts by itself
During a stopping phase the normal Start-Stop mode can be interrupted in the following situations: The engine restarts by itself without involvement from the driver.

  • The interior temperature differs from the value selected on the air conditioner.
  • Defrost function button activated.
  • The brake has been pressed several times consecutively.
  • The battery is too low.
  • High power consumption.

All of the other factors like engine temperature will supposedly prevent it from stopping in the first place, so shouldn't trigger a restart. I'm not sure how the engine temperature is affecting it however, since mine will always stop at the traffic lights leaving work, about a minute after a cold start.

 happened to me today when waiting for the missus to come out of a shop nearly peed my pants

Me to, sat at traffic lights for a while when engine kicked in, if it wasn't for the very slight vibration on start up I would never had known as the radio was on quite loud:lol:
