Leon fr spare wheel.

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and apologise that this question has already appeared several times but I still cannot find a definitive answer for my specific vehicle, either online or from Seat who didn't reply to my email. So I'm looking for advice from anyone who has the same model and can shed some light for me. I have just bought a 2018 Leon TSI 1.4 fr, obviously no spare wheel, in fact not even a tyre inflator just an empty foam insert. I'm looking for the cheapest option for a spare. The car has the factory17inch rims. What space saver diameter do I need? 16 or 17 inch? Some folk are even suggesting 18 inch. It is my understanding the 16 inch profile means it has the same rolling diameter as the actual wheels so in theory should be fine but is there issues with caliper/disk clearance? Or is the boot well sufficiently sized to accomodate a proper full sized wheel?
Many Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

The estate (ST) will hold a full sized wheel. The hatchback will only hold a space saver. Any space saver from 16'' up will fit and work on the car.

The easiest option is to get a Mk7 Golf wheel and tool kit off eBay. There are always plenty available from scrapped cars, often never used. You want the kit that fits to the side of the wheel.

You can get an inflator off eBay too. Fits nicely into the cubby under the drivers seat although you do want to stick a rag either sit of it to stop it rattling around.

Sorry to hijack.
Does the tool kit holder around the 18" spacesaver?

It should do as all the wheels have the same outer diameter whatever the rim size.

You only need a bigger space saver to clear the brakes on bigger cars. A 16'' space saver will clear the brakes on the 150 hp FR. The only advantage of a bigger rim is that you have more space inside the rim for other junk. I carry jump leads and a few other things in the middle of my wheel.

I can't remember what size my rim is, I think it's 16''. It came with a Golf I had and I kept it for the Leon.

This one is good as it has a stronger jack and leaves the hole in the wheel free for storage.

I kept the space saver and jack kit from the hatch (which fits down the side of the whee)l and whilst wheel is fine the jack kit doesn't fit the ST spare wheel well.
The kit for the ST goes under the space saver wheel, I doubt it would do that with a full size wheel but I may be wrong on that.
I bought a Skoda Jack kit that goes inside the spare wheel as I keep thinking I'll use a 16" winter wheel as a spare or get a 16" wheel but still haven't got round to it and I'm still using the space saver.
There's an old thread here: Thread 'Still having issues with the spare wheel foam' https://www.seatcupra.net/forums/threads/still-having-issues-with-the-spare-wheel-foam.461869/

Thanks mate, will order it. My car is 2.0 FR 184 2017, run on 18" wheels. Would that be ok?

The ST is much better than the hatch as it has a bigger and deeper well. It will take a full sized alloy, I have an 18'' alloy in our ST, but you want a tool kit that fits inside the wheel. Again, plenty on eBay.

The 184 has bigger brakes than the 150 so a 16'' space saver might not clear them. I would get a 17'' or 18'' wheel to be on the safe side as you know that will.

Where are you located? I have a 16" space saver from my Leon ST (had to get an 18" one due to fitting Subwoofer for Seat Sound).

@Mr Pig do you know if the curved foam insert with tools will fit around a 16inch alloy wheel as I was looking at getting an alloy as a spare wheel rather than a space saver, or if you knew where to get tool kit that would fit inside the alloy.

Hatch or ST (estate)? A full sized wheel of any size will fit in the ST. With wider wheels the boot floor rests on the wheel but it's not a problem. The hatch can only take a space saver. The curved kit fits around the space saver in the hatch. I don't know if it would fit around the wheel in the ST as I've never tried it. I'll have a look tomorrow. If you've not bought the kit yet I'd buy the one that fits inside the wheel, it's just better. The only reason for the curved kit is that there isn't room inside a space saver for a tool kit.

Ok do you have a link or know of a kit that fits inside? I remember reading that U mentioned about a Skoda foam insert and kit, was the tools, jack, brace etc all ok for the seat as sometimes jacks have different fitment

This is the Skoda kit in my wife's Leon ST. It'll fit inside a 16'' wheel and above. There are a few different kits that will work but this one is the best as it the good additional space for extra items.

Any modern VWG jack will work as all of cars are built on the same MBQ platform.
