Hey peeps!

Could you just tell me what you think of the Ibiza for motorway fun? Also, what's it like for fuel consumption generally.

Also. Are there any good points/bad points with the 1.2 I should know about?

Ta in advance!

James

sorry, I know very little about the 1.2 other than the fact that it is a 3 cylinder engine and has a dodgy chain and tensioner that drives the cams

I'm sure a few 1.2 owners will come along in a bit

for fuel economy and torque get a diesel

I get ~320 to a full tank now it's on 57k. 2 years ago on 16k when I got it it was more like 260 to a tank.

It's not a bad engine. Pretty fun around town, but I'm looking to upgrade in a few months

Motorway-wise it's not good. 70mph = 3500rpm, 80mph = 4000rpm Which is a little too high to be comfortably cruising. So not much fun really.

Mine's broke down twice in the 2 and a bit years i've had it. Once was tensioner (mentioned above) (see the known faults thread in the Mk4 FAQs section of the forum) and the other time the wire from the battery to the starter motor needed a plug replacing on one side. Other than that it's caused me no issues.

If you're doing alot of motorway miles (as I am now :( ) go for a TDI. Infact, go for a TDI regardless

I have a 1.2 70PS and can squeeze around 400 miles out of a tank (3000 miles old), once got a good 50 mpg on a pure-motorway run. I'd probably get more if I let Good Progress slip a bit and hopefully the fuel consumption should go down a bit more once it's completely bedded in. Motorway wise, my opinion is it's no real problem (it'll quite merrily break the speed limit, so I've been lead to believe... ) especially having driven the Polo 1.2 55PS. OK, so the engine is at 3500 rpm at this speed but the red line's at 5600 rpm and if you put your foot down on a flat road it will merrily pull on. Engine noise at this speed is not a problem considering the Ibiza's tyre roar.

Note that on certain steep hills (e.g., some on the A303) around 60-70mph it can start to run out of puff and have trouble maintaining speed or accelerating. (I normally just change down and see if it gets any more or wait until the hill evens out --- you get there in the end ;).)

Blimy, even I don't get that good mpg, maybe my MAF is on the way out... averaged 44mpg on 70 mile round trip.

I had one which struggled to get low thirties the entire time I was driving it, lot of town driving and a heavy right foot when it finally did get onto the open road may have contributed to this though  . Once got near 450 on all long runs although that was taking it real easy all the time...Just don't turn the aircon on...the little power there is and fuel economy both take a serious hit when you do!

Ive owned a Ibiza 1.2 SX and as much as at the time I thought it was a good car, it really didnt suit my driving. Great car, for inner city, little trips. But a nightmare on motorways and slightly annoying on country roads. The 1.2's mpg really does depending on how you drive it, if you remotely try to use the awesome power, then you can wave good bye to any decent mpg figures. Whilst the power itself is pretty much bad. Motorways arent fun, engine sounds like its going to break and has little to no grunt to get you to motorway speeds in the first place, nevermind increase speed to overtake etc. Again same for country roads, stuck behind a car doing 20mph and breaking badly for corners, but comes to a straight and they pull up to around 45/50mph you cant get past.

On a better note, its very cheap insurance, looks better than most of the usual crowd, can get decent mpg if u want it to.

Personally, looking back after now owning a PD130 FR. I sort wish I bought a diesel to start with, maybe just a iccle PD100 then mapped it after a year (ok yes less!) so it was running around the 140bhp mark, until around this sorta time (3 years driving) and then bought something with alot more go and alot less mpg! Im very happy with my PD130 but feel I need to keep it longer before moving onto new things as bought brand new.

My 1.2 has done 22K miles now. Motorway runs are good, usually get around 320-340 miles to a full tank. Treat her to some BP ULTIMATE unleaded, its worth it. Dont usually need to strain her, but I used to drive her very quickly when I got her so I think she just got used to it.

I think I could feel faster with some Cupra bumpers tho! :D

Get a 1.4 (85) for motoways.

Mine does 100mph around 4000rpm or something like that.

Will do 95mph in 4th lol.

if you remap them you can see figures of 170-180bhp in the fr (iirc) tdi and 200bhp in the cupraTDI  torquey too so theyre pritty quick but its the cheap option :) (please lets not turn this thread into a petrol vs diesel thread!)

for what I drive a 1.2 is fine and people round here, plus it keeps me out of trouble. Unlike my friend the other day, was doing 20mph over the speedlimit and got pulled, looked like a faster road have 2 say. Anyway 3 points and a bloody scarey copper, comes over to the car "GET the FU** OUT THE CAR" I just sat there like in amazment, there was no sir, remove the keys from the ignition. It was a stfu and say nothing moment haha. They also rang his mam from the the car (hes 17 aint been passed long bless lol)

lol I would have told the copper to get stuffed ringin my old dear, or can they do that to 17yr olds. Anyhoo whenever police get involved, and they dont seem to friendly I get one of my mates to film the entire thing. Some nasty coppers out there.

never been pulled in the beezer :)

but if the police got lippy with me like that ^^^^ id of rode my luck if i knew i had nothing to hide like void insurance or something :)

LOL they should have recorded the copper and then reported him. Never been pulled over so far either, even when wearing some suspect headgear to the amazement to my mates lol.
