GTI 16v

Guest
Hi there guys and gals. I have a red, 1996 1.8 16v GTI with FSH and 74.000mls.

The 1.8 16v gti has around 130hp. It was a engine specifically made for the ibiza and has a different and much better/smoother gearbox than the 2.0 16v clunky one.

Any way thought you would like to read the following article from the autocar magazine.

''Ibizas with the power to large it with the best of ‘em date back to the ’94 GT 16v. This was a pretty rare beast; Seat refused to keeps stocks, so if you wanted one of the original 130bhp models you had to wait for it to be built. Back then, as now, it had VW Polo underpinnings, but it was still a worthy stablemate for the slower, more refined 115bhp 2.0-litre GT. Its pace impressed – sixty mph came up in 7.8sec – as did its equipment and agreeable price. It was still only for the 100% converted revs addict though.
That car was let down by a successor that arrived in 1997, brought an extra 20bhp to the table, but proved slower and just as unrefined. The Cupra Sport 2.0 16v took a full second longer to crack the benchmark 0-60mph sprint, and was similarly slower between 30mph and 70mph. It remained a solidly built, well packaged hatchback, and offered a tenaciously pacey drive on or off the track – but it left us still waiting for a really good Ibiza hot hatch.''

Who else has this car on the forum???

And how much do you think I sell could mines for???

Thanks for looking.

Specifically built for the Ibiza, apart from when it was in the mk2 Golf GTi...

the 2.0 16v is quicker though...

I reckon you might see 1500

yeh i have a purple 1 m8,never seen another in the same colour like! i paid £1450 for mine about 6 months ago and it had 90k on it, just took that engine out and putting the 2ltr 16v in herhttp://www.seatcupra.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

What engine code does this beast have in it? And what injection system?
adl
the car is let down by its gearing,3,4,5 and the final drive are exclusive to that car,and its pants.
i had the 1.816v ibiza and the 2.016v cordoba, the cordoba felt much easier to drive on the boil, and felt alot stronger in the mid range

The engine is not from the mk2 golf MORK, it is a smaller engine variant of the mk3 2.0 16v and was only put in the ibiza, cordoba and toledo (but manly the ibiza). The mk2 golf is a totally different engine with a different ecu, the 1.8 16v ADL in the ibiza has a digifant system.

Although I dont agree with the 0-60 times. The 2.0 is faster. However I have owned both 1.8 1.6v and 2.0 16v and prefer the 1.8 due to the gear box and the flexible engine.

I found the gear box in the 2.0 doesnt match the engine so well as the 1.8 gearbox I prefer the longer gearing .

But at the end of the day its down to how you drive the car and what you use it for.

smaller engine variant? shorter block, and the 2ltr16v runs on motronic doesn it not?its a bit of "bitsa" bits of this bits of that :D

Here's my 2p worth!

I thought that the Ibiza 1.8 16v was based upon the short block engine previously used in the Mk2 Golf GTi as M0rk said. It had 139bhp in the Golf, but it didn't have a catalytic convertor in that car. When catalysts were added in the early 90's, that coincided with Mk3 Golf GTi and the 2.0 16v tall block engine. From memory the short block 1.8 16v did appear in some markets (possibly in an Audi 80?) with a catalyst - and guess what, the quoted power figure was 130bhp. So adding the cat lost 9bhp.

I'm guessing that between 1991 and 1994 when it appeared in the Ibiza, they probably tweaked the engine management a bit more as no doubt emissions were tougher in 94. Hence the Ibiza version of the engine has a different engine code and different management system.

As jason said, that engine was a 'bitsa' as Seat raided the VAG parts bin for the very first time.

Hi there I have a old issue of autocar from 1994. and it is written that the 1.8 16v is a smaller version of the 2.0 16v cutting down hp from 150-130hp. The cylinder head is different along with manifold and some sensors. I am positive about this, it even clearly states that the ADL engine has no conection to the ''screamer'' golf mk2 1.8 16v gti engine.

This is why I kept the 1.8 16v as its nearly the same performance as the 2.0 16v but witha much smoother gearbox. Also the isurance is so much cheaper group 12.

I am not sure really, but I am sure your much more knowlegeble than those silly guys at autocar.......

You will find the same information in back issues of top gear from 1994-96.

so what do yas think mine will go like with the 2ltr engine with the 1.8 gearbox flywheel and clutch???

I think you have the perfect combination there, in terms of engine and gearbox.

Nice one!!

Could you use the 2.0 clutch and flywheel?

What did you do for the brakes and ecu??

dident try it but i dont think the 1.8 box would have fitted over it, i am running same brakes at the mo until i up grade 2 willwood 4 pots, having afew probz with getting it going but i think we have worked out the problem, the 2ltr ecu doesent match my transponder key so need it re-codeing! but theres no spark at all:(

clutch is deffinately different sizes on the gearboxes,so i imagine the flywheel wil be too.input shaft also.

excellent i jus got my seat ibiza 1.8 GTI 16v an was looking for good information about it, here it is lol. so am i right in saying its a 130mph car with 0-60 in 8.0 seconds (give or take some)??

Also i didnt hear anyone mention having the other limited color.... the lime green :O
