2nd rocker gasket in 6 weeks on my lcr

thats the chestnut, i had this about 18 months back, tell tale sign is oil collecting ontop of the bell housing above the gear linkage,


Rocker cover off

preload the chain tensioner via tool

3 torx bolts

new gasket & halfmoon replaced,

30-45 mins tops.

How did you do it without taking the cam out?

As you fit the tensioner tool it slackens the chain and allows about 10mm of lift once you take the old gasket and half moon out. Then you just fit the new halfmoon and slide in the new gasket then tighten the tensioner down and remove the lockong tool

If you google 1.8t tensioner gasket guide. You should find a couple that have done a guide. I got kine from an a3 owners club

Its a lot easier to do than it may appear

How did you do it without taking the cam out?

Once the chain tensioner has been compressed down you are able to lift it enough to slip the gasket in without touching the cam at all.

Can those who have actually done it confirm do you need to get TDC and mark the chain links to prevent messing up the timing or do you simply use the tensioner tool without worry?

I put it at TDC and marked the chain links on either side along with the sprocket, There are arrows on the bearing caps next to the chain, mark the sprocket and chanin in line with those,
there must be 16 rollers between the 2 marks,
Then you can use the special tool,

No need to worry. Youre not physically moving the sprockets from the chain so its near On impossible
To knock the timing.

You will need some sealant as well, I used Dirko stuff
