NUMBERPLATES are not fashion accessories, police warned as they started a crackdown this week.
Drivers face a £30 on the spot fine or a court appearance if they have altered their plates to spell a name or word.

It might appear harmless but it is being targeted in the week-long Operation Larch.

Sgt Neil Fillingham said: "Driving with illegal number plates is not something that should be taken lightly. Motorists can be fined up to £1,000 for displaying an illegal number plate.

"Although the majority of vehicle owners conform, there are those who flout the law and display plates with incorrect colours, characters, font and spacing.

"The purpose of a registration plate is to identify a vehicle; it is not a fashion accessory."

I was filling up with petrol a few months back and a guy pulled in with a Japanese import (think it was a Skyline) U.K registered but no front plate.

The guy in the petrol station forced him to turn his car round so the video camera could read the back plate!

The driver gave the guy behind the till some grief, but I'd don't blame the petrol station at all.

Its a tough issue, in the past ive had the police say to me if i drove off from an accident or similar the plate is what the public need to reconise, and they cant do that if its all funny characters / fonts ... but why is there the need for a front plate?

Ruins the look of most cars, and when driving past someone its not like you can read and remember a full plate... rear one is all we need imo...

Hi the pics look great but a word of warning the black plate is illegal on anything after 1970 (i think) and if stopped by the police you might get off with a warning or maybe a £30 ticket but they will send a report to DVLA who ( and I am assuming this is a private plate) will write and warn you that as a private plate they will revoke your plate if stopped again and you will have to pay to reregister your vehicle. I like the look but the law has no 'taste'.

Alan.

Apparently now, round here anyway, if you are caught with an illegal private plate you are given a warning. If you are caught a second time they will have the plate removed and the car will then be registered with a Q plate by DVLA which won't look cool, de-value the car and cannot be changed

I got a new set of plates made up for my car today.. Also got a square front as an extra to see what it looks like. Should be nice with a 5dig no plate. Anyone done that? I seen a pic on here once of it

I was wondering about that earlier today, post some pics when you've done it!

You'll probably get away with that too, not too small, they probably won't notice.

I chopped the sides off my front dealer plate (got a 6 digit private reg) and refitted to my Ibiza, looks a lot better. I've seen cops look at it, but I've never been pulled. They can't do anything anyway, the letters are correct size and spacing, and there is more than 12mm of border around the letters. It was checked on the MOT too, and they confirmed it was fine.

Had this plate fitted now. Back is standard size front is 3/4.
