4 year service & MOT price

Hi guys,

Wanted to get some feedback on a price I've just been quoted from Seat in Salford, Manchester.

I've got a 1.2 sx Ibiza and it's now 4 years old. I'm looking at getting it booked in for its service and MOT. Seat in Manchester say the 4 year service is a big one, as they have to swap out the spark plugs, pollen filter etc. The guy told me he'd do the MOT and service (with the changing of the spark plugs etc) for 240 inc VAT, parts and labour. Is this decent?

The original cost was 275 I believe, but I managed to haggle him down a bit. I've looked at other garages, and the prices have gone from similar to very cheap, although I am wary of these 99 quid service deals that probably won't give the car the attention it needs.

Anyway, any feedback on this price is much appreciated!

Sounds about right for service and MOT inclusive - pretty good price actually. I just had a 60,000 mile service @ stealer worked out @ £220 IIRC (Stockport SEAT)

Obviously cheaper is better but, including the MOT, it's in the right kind of ball-park.

Strictly speaking the brake fluid should be changed every 2 years - if the price does already include that then it's very good, otherwise it should cost around £40 (including the fluid).

One thing I would say is that it's generally not a good idea to get an MOT done at a dealer. I know this, but still slipped up and had our 1.2S MOT'd at LC Charles in Crewe because the MOT was included as part of a servicng deal (although the brake fluid wasn't, which I feel was a con). They failed the MOT on a couple of iffy points (front suspension bush and uneven rear brakes). They rang me at the last minute to say it had failed and I had little choice but to pay them £200 or so to sort it out.

I'm most dismayed with SEAT that the suspension bush should be worn to the point of failing at just 34K miles of little more than main road commuting. And the rear brakes (drum brakes) simply needed servicing - interesting that on our Mitsubishi Colt this is done automatically as part of the service.

I'm also bemused that the dealer can do a full service, but then the car still fails MOT - surely they should have picked these things up in the service if they were that bad. That leads me to think that the main dealer service isn't all that thorough, so, I wouldn't be too hung about getting it done at a SEAT dealership. The work required is very straight forward, especially if you can find a VAG specialist.

On some cars it's worth carrying on with servicing at the dealership for possible goodwill repairs etc, but you won't get any of that from SEAT UK.

My car is booked in at Seat for next tuesday, having the Cambelt, service and M.O.T done, as well as any warranty work, price £420 including V.A.T and labour etc.

Seemed a decent price, i know from experience a cambelt change is a pain in the arse to do DIY, but i spose they have all the right tooling to do it so it shouldnt take long

I think that's dead right, and you want some sort of comeback in case it does ever snap.

My FR TDi had a 5year/50K mile service yesterday, although it has only done 40K miles. I had the brake fluid changed last year but this time they changed the pollen, air and fuel filters. They also did the MOT as well and the total price was £270. That was at my local SEAT dealer. They also washed and vacuumed it and loaned me a 58 reg Leon Ecomotive. Nice of them but I was not too impressed with the Leon. :(

Yeah thats exactly what i was thinking, does it seem like a fair price? Car's done 30k so its only a light service.

Plus, with the plans i got this year i thought i would be best to get the Cambelt and Service done before i get it remapped etc.:D

£292 yesterday for a service and the front set of brake discs & pads replacing at a local garage.

Ouch!

Sounds reasonable to me. Ive just paid £200 for pads and disks alone (just parts).

Probably is seeing the full list of what has been done on it. It's basically had the full 60,000 service schedule which the dealers did not seem to do when I bought it. Car had around 61,000 on and due a service but they only did a standard 10,000 mile one on it.

Everything feels tighter now and she drives like a good 'un!

Cheers for the feedback guys. It did seem like a decent figure for doing the lot, but there's a garage in my home town of Middlesbrough that I've had stuff done at quite a few times, so I got a quote off them - £169 inc VAT and everything else! It saves me £45 even with the petrol it takes to get back to Boro from Manchester. They're really good guys too, always very up-front about charges or any extra work, and never charge a penny more than they need to.

Had myself booked in at the dentist near where I used to live for a check-up on the same day i'm taking the car in, so two birds with one stone :)
