Backend stepping out badly in the wet

just got 02 lc. had the front 2 tyres changed for falken 452's yesterday. Some make called 'champiro' on the backs with about 3 mm of tread on.

In the wet going round roudabouts she WILL step out. Even in normal driving conditions. even with the misses driving with baby. Last night she ended up facing the other way driving round a rounabout in the the wet. Now she's spooked. the car is for her and 'our' family second car

I done a few journeys today in the rain, and the things steps out far too easily.

It got too dry before i could test driving without the TRC ESP etc. Maybe there is a problem with the driver aids?

Is it that the new tyres are dragging the shite tyred back end round?

Is this normal for an lc to do this?

Have a search on here as it's been discussed many times before why you should put the new tyres on the back, but if you can't be bothered it's precisely to stop the thing you're seeing now. ;)

3mm on the back I'd have been tempted to get all 4 replaced to be honest. Not so much if they were a better make but trusting these 'Champiro' on the back is no no, especially with a baby onboard .
I'm surprised the garage didn't advise you a little better.

Aren't Champiro made by one of the major tyre manufactures as one of their budget brands? Can't remember for the life of me which one it's supposed to be though.

mate had Khomos on the rear, and proxes on the front, any time he went round sharp corner in the wet the back stepped big time, just change the backs mate, its not worth messing about with. its dangerous really.

get 4 of the same make & brand on the car pronto fella. Or as worst case if ££ prevent it for now, the falkens on the rear if newer. (they're not good in the wet either in my experience of them)

Fk452 or ZE512 Bill? Had no issues with my FK452 at all - but that's with antiroll bars front and rear.

Loose driving in poor conditions on greasy roads will result in grip problems, 3mm of tyre is not a lot, 3mm of cold hard compound tyre is even worse. I would also suggest doing all your braking before you approach a corner and not carry too much speed through it. I wonder if the reason for the snap out is due to that or an adjustment of cornering line which cause the car to lighten on the back.

Mine only steps out when i'm being silly and lets be honest, a wet public road is no place for that.

How old is the car? Is the rear suspension OK.

I changed my front tyres on my LCR to T1-R's and left some fairly worn P-Zero Rosso's on the back. Was sketchy as f@ck. The rears make such a difference on the Leon. I struggled to feel the break point on the LCR, it was grip, grip, grip, NO grip. Not very progressive.

FOr the sake of the safety of your family its worth getting it sorted.

start with 4 new ones and swop over to equalise wear.. then replace the 4 again etc.

understand why people put them on the front thinking traction/grip... but the reality seems more about balancing grip between front and back when cornering. but even on fresh rubber all round the leon seems better when you avoid sharp movements and glide it as opposed to man-handling it round a bend.

452's are what I ran on ibiza..
hatefull wet grip.

GSD3's used for wet or Potenza S03's whilst I could get them in different league. muchos suspension mods on mine.

(Racing, but still on road tyres)

Bill I have had the FK452's on the Leon for at least 9 months now and through the winter. Wet weather grip has not been an issue at all and they are leagues ahead of the OE Pirellies. Probably not running as much power as your Ibiza and the Leon is I assume heavier but they do seem to suit it well.

Could be that the ibiza I imagine is quite a bit lighter.

I also try and run the same brand on all four.

I ended up with 4 new FK452s last week

I've just changed to a set of 4 Michelin Pilot Sport 2's as I couldn't get hold of the Goodyear Asymmetrics and my tyres were beyond legal. Much better than I thought they would be, but dry weather performance is their strength. The S3 came with Conti Sport Contact 2's and they had amazing wet weather performance, particularly wet cornering. Not so good in the dry as the Michelin's, but there's not a lot in it.

i quite like the skiddy back but then im use to the s2000, Matched tyres solved the problem or better tyres on the rear will do the same, but i hate mis-match branded tyres.

I'm a massive fan of PS2s, but due to the cost and the car going up for sale I couldn't justify them.

I've still got them on my spare 17" LC rims in the garage

Comapny car coming :(

But if I can get a toy it'll have Ps2s on it

Thought i'd revive this thread instead of starting a new one. I've got the same issues as when i bought the car i asked for new tyres all round because the old ones were getting near the limit. The dealer put dunlop sports on the front and ceat tornados on the back. Turn in is fine in all conditions, but the rear end grip is extremely poor in the wet - even tip-toeing round roundabouts the tail comes out. What would people recommend? New tyres on the back and keep the dunlops up front? Which tyres should i look at to replace the tornados? Thanks in advance.
