I have had the knock error before and put it down to using low octane petrol; it doesn't seem to reoccur when using 99ron. If it comes back would it be worth swapping the knock sensors over and see if the error follows the sensor? This would show up a dodgey sensor?

No, I wouldn't fiddle with them, just replace. (If you get it coming back). Difficult to get at - and must be torqued up exactly.

ah ok Dave, thanks :) I'll see how I get on using just vpower for a while. Would lower octance fuel be a reasonable explanation for knock? Would reducing boost spikes using an MBC in parallel with the N75 help too (assuming knock happens at peak boost)?

I might expect to see a rare 'intermittent' knock fault code - but a non-intermittent one gives a bit more cause for concern.

Boost = heat; high cylinder temps make correction factors more likely. Higher octane fuels lessens knock/CFs.... I wouldn't use less than Vpower. :) Good idea to try and get rid of big boost spikes.

I never used to use less than V-Power but the Shell garage in Loughborough has been bought buy Texaco! I've been using a mix of tesco 99 and bp ultimate. It definitely runs better on the tesco so I think it might be the BP causing issues (if it is petrol related). I'll plumb in an MBC in the next couple of days alongside the N75 and cap boost at say 20psi (it currently spikes to 23-24psi) and see how I get on from there.

Thanks again :)

right, so EGT sensor not working leads to excess fuel which explains backfiring.. would knock sensors pick up backfiring as knock as I hear they are similar to microphones?

knock sensors could be wiring also from ones I've seen go wonky and all hell breaks loose.. weird timing, surging whilst driving... the works

EGT sensor is screwed into your K04s turbine housing

EGT is in the turbo, i have a spare one somewhere, along with a knock sensor, il have a look if you need them mate.

Cheers Shaun, I'm going to give it a long test later today trekking across the country and see how I get on; but I'll let you know if I need either sensor :) Thanks for the offer :)

So what am I best keeping an eye on to make sure this isn't the case? CFs to ensure timing pull isn't massive?
