Bi Xenon Headlights Queries

I’ve gone for the bi-xenon option on my new FR after seeing the light :lol: with a non xenon and xenon headlight comparison on the golf gti forum. Anyway the question I have is does the xenon work on main beam as well as dipped and are the sidelights uprated as well as I’ve seen some cars with xenons with standard sidelights which look awfully yellow in comparison. If that is the case I suppose I can uprate the sidelights with the Philips blue vision ones.

Any comments?

Found this into to Bi - Xenon with AFS;

"The most notable of these are the bi-xenon headlights with Advanced Front Lighting System (AFS). This system blends the superior luminous power and quality that bi-xenon headlights are renowned for, with all of the benefits of AFS intelligent control.

The AFS system uses the information gleaned from various rotational and speed sensors in the vehicle to adjust the direction of the beam of light emitted by the headlights, resulting in optimum illumination in all situations. What's more, these headlights also automatically adjust the height of the beam as the vehicle load changes, doing away with the need for fiddly and less accurate manual adjustment.

These headlights are also made special by the fact that they are able to turn asymmetrically. In a right-hand bend, for instance, the headlight on the right will turn more sharply than its counterpart on the left (15 and 8 degrees respectively), allowing drivers to see the inside of the bend or the side road far more clearly while the left-hand headlight maintains optimum illumination of the area to the front of the vehicle.

The result: the road ahead is lit up to maximum effect, improving levels of visibility and, consequently, safety. The intelligent bi-xenon headlights with AFS expand the effectively illuminated zone when cornering by up to 30% and increase the distance at which objects ahead or cars in bends can be detected by as much as 68%: at a speed of 70 km/h, this would give drivers an extra 1.8 seconds to react."

That is interesting reading, I am thinking about changing to a mk2 Leon FR and am considering the option of Bi-Xenons, although not cheap the AFS function seems useful.

Does anyone have experience of these on a new Leon? Are they really worth the £800+ option price? Also are mk2 standard headlights any better than the standard mk1 Leon ones?

Cheers

Had them fitted to my TFSi... I think that, although expensive, they are well worth the extra.

Having driven my MK1 Leon for 4 years, I made the choice based on how useless the headlamps were, and I must say, the xenons are excellent.

Stuart, I've ordered an FR with the Bi-Xenon, am I right in thinking that you loose the manual headlamp adjustment from inside the car ?

Yes, thats right, by law all new cars sold fitted with Xenon lights must have automatic headlight levelling (so you lose your manual adjustment) and headlight washers fitted to prevent dazzling other road users.
