Hi Guys,

On Friday night my car gave the oil pressure light and told to consult the manual, called the AA who came and towed me home.

The AA came back yesterday morning to tow me to the Seat garage.

Spoke to the head mechanic who said, that there was a recall on this fault and I responded to say I had never received a letter. He also said that nothing else will be affected like the turbo, pistons or head.

The car is out of warranty by a few months. They are going to apply to Seat for good will as the car has complied with warranty in every way and serviced / MOT'd by the dealer.

If they are agree it won't cost me anything and will take about 6 hours to do all the work.

Just thought I would share my experience.

I got this warning last night - but had just changed the oil filter housing...changed it back to original and it vanished. Hoping it was just that!

It's a loud tapping noise.

I had no choice but stop.

It sounded as though the engine was going to come out of the bay.

Ah mine didn’t sound any different. I gave it a bit of beans once changing it back to the original and all seemed well.

I'm glad the dealer is sorting it for me as a good will otherwise its going to cost a fortune.

I also didn't receive a recall notice; I assume because they don't classify it as a safety issue, but since mine dumped all its oil on the road and forced me to get the car off a fast road very quickly. I'd argue it is a potential safety issue.

Anyway, hopefully they've got to yours sooner than mine, as I had to have a whole new head fitted which would have run into the thousands had it not been under warranty. Definitely push for goodwill payment here because they failed to notify you of the recall.

Exactly the same as mine. 1.2TSI. It's now 3.5 years old but failed at approx 2.5 years old (21k miles).

I’ve just done over 26k in mine...had it since new (June 2016). Went for a drive and gave it a hard time. Light/warning didn’t come back. Still gonna give Seat a call to see if there are any recalls outstanding for it.

Thankfully in your case it sounds like they've caught it before failure so should just a require an upgrade of the pulley.

Update:

Spoke to the dealer today and they have said that seat will pay 90% of the bill for good will.

They reckon that I have been lucky, but they said there is 2 routes they can go down:
1. Replace the pulleys, belt, oil, casing and something else (They said that this should fix the issue and the car should run fine.

They didn't give me the second option. It seems to me that they are playing at trying to fix it.

What are other peoples views on this?

Also, dropped the car off last Saturday morning and I have asked for a car everyday I have spoke to them and they can't even get a car next week.

Why just the 90%? The issue was known and had you have been informed at the right time 100% of the work would have been done within warranty.................. For all you know this could be a ploy of SEAT UK to deliberately not inform owners and hope that the failure occurs outside of the warranty to reduce cost to them, maybe that's just a conspiracy theory but they wouldn't be offering anything unless they felt they had some responsibility.

If the pulley didn't get as far as failing like mine did, I think they're right that replacement of the pulley and associated parts is sufficient. I would be asking them to check and confirm that there is no valve/piston damage though.

My failure, and the other ones seen on forums like the A3 I linked above, were catastrophic because the pulley completely broke apart causing the belt to slip, valve damage and major oil leakage. By that point your engine either wont be running or will sound like a bag of spanners. Significantly worse than the tapping noise it starts with.

I'd be interested to ask them what the 2nd option is!

Mostly importantly, if you accept their proposal for a fix (regardless of what % you end up paying), find out how long they're guaranteeing their fix for. I would expect it to be at least 1 year / 20k miles for such a significant issue. That way if the problem does reoccur (or get worse) you've got good grounds to challenge it.

There is no "recall" on the Leon for this fault. Check here. If it was a "recall" then warranty and age make no difference, SEAT would sort it for free.

What there may be is some kind of technical service bulletin, which is entirely internal to SEAT and up to them how they deal with it. If they have stumped up 90% of the cost then it's a pretty clear admission of fault.

So if a significant fault is identified but it is not considered a safety issue they don't recall, so therefore on the next routine service it should be rectified surely.

Without getting tied up in semantics, there is a recall on it; just of a different type, which not being classified as a safety issue means that DVSA don't get involved. It would have been picked up at the next service but I find it bizarre that SEAT were not proactively contacting owners who are still under warranty about it, as the cost for them to repair in my case jumped from a few quid for an updated pulley to thousands for a whole new head, but hey..

My opinion is that this is potentially a major safety issue and so should have been recalled as such. As you said above, the fact that SEAT are willing to pay 90% of the repair cost when out of warranty seems unusually generous as a "goodwill" gesture.
