Car takes almost ten minutes to heat up, is this normal?

By contrast my parents car (Celica) heats up in about 10 seconds, and if I remember correctly my old 306 took less than a minute too!

My dad's suggested getting a new thermastat, and even though Lee has put up a great guide (thanks Lee) it still seems like it's quite a difficult job and possibly beyond me as I'm rubbish at cars - kinda hoping there could be something else to check? Or maybe it's normal?

Thanks :)

.
My TDI takes between 7 and 10 min for the temp gauge to get up to 90, think this is pretty normal

Oh is it :S

Fair enough then, and glad I asked - thanks :)

Guess I'll just have to carry on turning my car on an extra 10 minutes earlier to help de-ice it lol

My TDI can take up to 20 mins to warm up in this cold weather or about 10 miles. Perfectly normal for diesels. Petrol burns hotter than diesel so the engine will get to ambient running temperature quicker. It also depends on where the temp sensor is in the cooling system
