coil pack help needed BIG TIME NOW...& a bit of meets chat

guys iv not heard of any one with this issue so i want to share it and also see if any one (Lee, Bill, and the other 20vT boffins lol) can help out with it

tail end of the summer i popped a coil pack, pot 3 to be presise, in the end i had to get Mr AA out to save me, 45 quid later it was sorted, i had put the pack from pot 1 in to pot 3 and the new one went in pot 1.
last saterday (strangley on the same road as last time) i managed to pop another pack, i limped it home as i left me spares there for some reason only to find out it was pot 3 again, i chucked a spare (it was used) in to pot 3, all sorted.
today went for a drive for the first time this week as the mrs has had it and 15 mins of driving POP goes another pack, i had to go about 3 mile till i could stop, grabbed a spare out of the boot (had 3 in there this time) went under the bonnet and it was pot 3 again...
this time i have put the pack from pot 2 in to pot 3 and my spare in pot 2.

any one have any ideas whats going on? the spares i have are genuine vag stuff from a S3 and all my packs on the car (bar the AA one) are all genuine too...

im doing my own head in on this :confused:[:@]:blink:

Swapping 1 to 3 and then that going in 3 isn't an issue as it was an old coil pack so was prone to go anyway. The fact a new ones now gone could just be pure coincidence and it could have just been a bad coil pack or it could have taken a knock or something? unless it happens again (although you've now put an old coil pack in 3 so its probably going to go before 1 and 2).

I'd put the new one back in 3 and see how you get on. If it goes again then it needs looking into.
 
Any chance that the new pack are fakes tez?? They were an eBay jobbie went they ;)
 
i bought 4 spares from ebay but they had been taken out of a 30K mile Audi S3, all have the same part numbers as mine did...
 
i know but for 4 quid for all 4 lol i love miss spelt auctions lol

bosch super 4's that have now done 3k miles if that and have been taken out and cleaned about 2 month ago

if i didnt spend that 4 quid id would have been sat in a lay by for hours waiting for the aa again lol
 
Tez I thinks you should just get some more spares and just see how it goes mate ;) try getting a new one they keep bringing new ones out ;)
 
has any one got a list of the part numbers i can use in the LCR, they all look aloke with only the last letter differing, and in some cases the first letter too...
would like to know what ones from the audi bolt down will work too like some of the TT's have
 
ring GSF and give them your reg ECT ask for the part number they get for it then try stealers and so on hey should meet up TBH mate as far as im aware the newest ones are always in like fashion
 
buy 4 genuine ones, fit them all at once then you'll see if no3 is at fault.

the part number i have is:

ok a few of my thoughts:

1 always buy good coils. buy cheap buy twice, three times... more....

2 second hand coils. why are they second hand? has one failed so they replace them all in the knowledge that the others will soon fail?

3 bosch super 4s... get rid of them.

PS the letter at the end of the part number represents its 'version'. Each time they make a change, or update it them the letter will advance, so a D version should be newer and manufactured after a 'C' version, and hopefully be an improvement.
Of course why its been updated is not known, if may be to improve the product due to poor performance in the past, (which coils are well known for) but on another updates it could be simply a differently sourced product, new factory, different company etc, or parts within the product are different, or even updated to be cheaper/more efficient to manufacture.

General rule though is get the latest version you can. (to avoid the earlier versions that were troublesome). avoid earlier than 06B 905 115 R

ill add the part number for the bolt down coils from a car that has the original coils still in place after more than 10 years shortly:
06B 905 115 E (93) These are HITACHI, bolt down, needing two allen key headed bolts for pack.
WARNING, will fit LCR but will affect how the vac thingy fits on top of the two right hand coil packs as these coil packs are a fair bit wider ahead the head to allow bolting.

as far as i'm aware...... 06B 905 115 R is the latest revision of the coilpack

and i agree with the staying away from ebay coilpacks...... i found out the hard way :(
and also... ditch the bosch super 4s for some NGK iridiums.... they are magic :)
have don 15k on mine and had them out at 10k just to give them a clean and check them out.... no problems with them
 
hey guys thank you for the info...
how comes ppl dont like the super 4?? iv had them in most of my cars, i thought the LCR had a 3 prong plug oem... the NGKis a single?, i will look at getting the ngk in the new year but some one will need to sell me on to them, i had a NGK fail on me on my old bike and iv not gone back to them.
the packs i have came from a crashed S3 that was being broken up, they are all "J" versions if i remember rightly,
depending on what happens in the new year money wise (i have anothe baba on the way) im guna try and get a new set of packs, a rear ARB and a set of springs, best place to get the packs?
i can see sams put a link up but are the packs as good as OEM??
