Hi all.

To give a little back story I've had my Cupra since November 2011 and regularly got 50mpg+ on the way to and from work and VERY rarely below 40mpg even when pushing it.

I then did a few mods, Stage 1 remap was included with this. No RR as they didn't have time to do it that day but they are a very well known and trusted remapper but I'll mention no names just yet. The car was fine, didn't really feel any differences but I don't boot my car often, I mostly wanted it for the increase in MPG.

I then went to a meetup at said remapping company and participated in their RR runs. Bare in mind I go 50mpg on the way there. After the first runs my car was producing 173BHP which as you all know is very low for a stage 1 remap and a fair bit down from the usual 200bhp quote which they state as well as MANY other companies. I spoke to them, they had a play with their laptop on the car and chucked it back on the rollers. It produced about 185 then but had a big dip in the power band at 2250-2750 on the revs. I was told it may just be full of crap and need a spirited run to clean the turbo etc all out. This seems plausible as, as I say, I don't boot the car often and use it to commute every weekday. So I proceed to boot it on the way home and get 35mpg roughly, I also felt a shudder on the revs between the stated revs, like the car struggled but it smoothed out instantly over 2750.

I then proceeded to drive to work and never got over 40mpg. I never have since to be honest. I contacted them and asked if they could put the standard Stage 1 map back on for me so it would be without the modifications they did at the meet up. They sent me to one of their 3rd party dealers who was a pleasant guy seemingly knowledgeable and he had the car for 2 hours whilst I wandered around the town centre as he said he needed to send the ECU download off to HQ to get a map (Which I thought odd as it's a standard map for this car generally with them all being the same ECU!) but I drove the car home and still had crap MPG.

Since then I have had the car serviced, cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the fuel filter and air filter and cannot locate what's going on. I drove to the shops with the MAF sensor disconnected to see if that had gone and the car drove like crap so the MAF must be working.

I have ordered the smaller EGR gasket but not fitted it yet as i'm doubtful this will fix the issue.

I do have RR prinouts before and after the modifications were done if you guys want to see them but I really have no idea how to fix my car and I'm falling out of love with it as it's costing me an arm and a leg to keep topped up now. I average around 32mpg from 50mpg!!

Help please!

That's all I can put it down to as well. Thought the place is very respected and has a huge following. I contacted my local tuning company who offer Revo and APR maps and they can do me an APR one for £250 but then I've paid almost £600 for a map plus all the travel costs etc... My cam belt is due for replacement as well.. Everything seems to be money at the moment! Doing my head in lol but what can you do eh!

To be honest I'd tell them you want it put right and that you're not happy... I wouldn't spend more money when someone hasn't done what they advertise for. Yes you'd expect worse mpg but not that much worse.

Coolant temp sensor

How much is one of these? And how hard to replace? Also what makes you think it's that? Just curious really before I start chasing the new remap option as I'm sure a sensor will be a lot cheaper!!!!

Well, I expected to get more MPG which is what 99% of people say you get. I am reluctant to make the 2 hour round trip to get it *potentially* fixed as well!

I have a Cupra Diesel remapped to 204BHP, my car didn't want to start this morning at all! I have had some issues before but it would always start after a couple of times, could occasionally be a bit reluctant and lumpy when running, poor MPG and it had also gone into limp home mode a couple of times when the engine was cold but the engine management light would never come on.

Anyway, the RAC came out today managed to get it started though it was extremely unwilling, very lumpy once it got going and filled the entire housing estate with black smoke, at first he thought it was a dodgy EGR valve but the management light came on after he turned it off and started it a second time. Low and behold the 'coolant temperature sensor' was coming up as faulty.

Supposedly it's very common issue, problem is the engine thinks it's a lot colder than it actually is and pumps more diesel into the engine than necessary making it reluctant to go/start at extremes.

Anyway I've been told it's dirt cheap, I just need to go and get it changed now, but for the meantime hopefully it will start tomorrow as I need to get to work :(.

What you say sounds very much like my issues.

The more I read about temp sensor issues the more it adds up. My car is hard to start when warm and lumpy when cold.

I've contacted Dave at SERE for a price and will check with VCDS in the mean time. Fingers crossed it is this as its a cheap fix!

Can anyone let me know how you check the temp sender with vag-com as my cupra tdi runs a bit lumpy when cold but shows no fault codes at all?

There's lumpy when cold and hard to start when cold. Both are two different things. Diesel s are always lumpy in the depths of winter, well all of mine have been and I've had a fair few. My TDi Cupra is no exception, as long as its not lumpy when the temp begins rise I wouldn't worry...if its problematic when trying to start then I would.

Yep, mines in good health and could be described as "lumpy" when cold. Nothing like my old pug dturbo though.

Coming back to this, I have changed the temp sender and I still have crap MPG. Any more advice?

To update what I've done so far

Changed fuel filter
Changed air filter
Changed MAF sensor
Changed temp sensor
Changed oil (car serviced)

Seeing as the only thing thats changed is the map, id suspect it being down to that.

Mines got a stage1 map, and i average high 40s some times dipping in the low 50s mpg.

Also in the cold cold mornings is neither lumpy or hard to start.

Remove the mapp it's defo a bad map by the sounds of it.

Or possible cam or crank sensors could be playing up possibly

Is there any way to put a standard map on myself before I put down £250 for an APR map? I have VCDS Lite but no idea what/how I'd do.

I'd love to try the standard map if possible as it has the "unnamed" stage 1 map on at the moment still.

Its not something you can do your self. The mapper should be able to put a standard map back on it.

The dealer should aslo be able flash a ecu.
