Same debate (over my car) over on Brisky, where even 1.4TSI owners are using Tesco Momentum. Intriguing that. Same powertrains, different views from the end users. Either way, I've just stuffed it full of V Power at £1.31 / litre (vs Tesco currently at £1.27/l). The bit that impresses me most is the complete lack of understeer under power out of a tight corner, even in the wet, even on Pirellis at near zero Deg C temps. I'm looking forward to next Spring!

I'm a bit disappointed that despite using ECO mode, and trying to be sensible yesterday evening, the best I could manage on the run down the M4 (100 miles) was 33mpg. Same driving approach would have seen nearly 40 out of my Octy.
I'm wondering if the tyres are having an effect here, they certainly did with the Octy. Fronts on mine are Pirelli Zero Nero. Will have a set of of Wintrac Xtreme S on next week so that might have an effect. I know the Cupra is one of those cars you're not supposed to worry about mpg, but thing is if like me it's your only car, it would be perfect to have the performance for the days when you want it, and economy for the days you don't. The engine is clearly capable of it from the evidence in this thread.

How fast were you cruising at and did you use cruise control?

70mph on my 40 mile dual carriageway commute returned 36.3mpg in eco mode.

I got 48.7 on trip thru to Glasgow (for a work meeting) in Comfort/Eco mode last week, trying to keep to 60 - 80 depending on traffic, some slow road works. Got 45.8 on way back as we were finished work and going home a bit quicker.

CC was on wherever I could, but the traffic was heavy so I'd say that half the journey was trundling along at 50-60 mph, the other half slightly higher.
I found that Sport mode, manual shifting didn't make it worse, and is a lot more driveable. I'm no fan of the coasting effect (which is contra the highway code if you're driving a manual), so I'm not going to be using it often.

That's a world apart from what I've seen, and even if I was a bit lead footed in ECO mode no way explains a 10mpg difference. Are you sure it's petrol?? ;)

TBH if I got >35mpg on an ECO run, I'd be OK with that, anything more is a bonus (at 45p per mile expense rate). To get 40+ on a long run on the M-Way would be cake and consumption. All of this of course is assuming a level of accuracy of the on board trip computer. The real test is using something like fuelly. I'm getting around 300 miles out of last two tank fulls, as a very rough guide.

Seriously??

How many miles has your car done (have I asked you that before)??

I know I pride myself on a decent eco run but I never thought those numbers were possible. I struggle to get 40+mpgs if I exceed 60mph on my generally quiet dual carriageway run with ACC set.

2250 miles, overall is now 29.7 on computer (29.5 on fill up to fill up) worst I have had on a journey was 25 ish, but I drive a lot with MIL, missus, grandkids, workmates etc and with a bit of carefull driving this car can easily do 40 plus. But as I give it the beans when out alone, that's why my overall is only 29 ish, having said that, back in 1996 my 1.8 (130BHP) Biza GTI got 28 ish no matter how you drove.

Fitted a set of vredestein wintrac extreme s on Tuesday. 600 miles later and journey home from North Yorks. Average speed door to door 63mph, average fuel economy 34.1

reading this I'm sort of glad I went for the 184 TDi, although there's times when the 1.8TSi does seem attractive.....still - 34 mpg in a 280 HP hatch is pretty damn good. my daughter's 1.4 golf TSi doesn't do much better.

Really? I had a hire 1.4 TSI Bluemotion DSG Golf a few months back and regularly got 60mpg+

hers is a 2008 Mk5 GT sport, so it's got the supercharger as well as the turbo. So it's older tech, and the supercharger won't help.
Must admit, since the dealer worked it over it's never run better, but she hasn't done a consumption comparison yet

No, they do a 235 35 19 so kept the same wheels.

Im thinking of buying a cupra so I got a quote today for the vred extreme tyres, 4 @ £186 or £194 for the extreme s. Does that sound reasonable (if that possible to say). After driving a 1 series BMW for a few years with winter tyres I don't think I could go back to summers in winter. Its bloody dangerous. I also don't want to damage a £28k car.

Look on mytyres. They did have them on offer. I got mine through a mobile fitter I've been using for years. I believe he bought them direct from a Dutch supplier.

Thanks. They are doing the xtremes for £162 fitted and the S's for £178.

Anyway, mute point at the moment. Haven't even bought the car.
