Does anyone know what size speakers fit into the dash? Ive removed the tweeters as they are blown and was thinking of replacing them with proper speakers instead of tweeters. Any ideas? Anyone done this? I assume its just a simple job.

I did it in my old mk2.. fitted a set of Sony Dual way speakers (120W) pretty good too. (better then just tweeters anyway) cant you just measure the size off one of your old Tweeters?

The speakers in the dash are 10cm. Its quite difficult to find speakers but i no jbl, blaupunkt and sony do them. Fusion and alpine will probably do them as well. Its just up 2u which company u wud prefer to buy!!

ok cheers for that. Do you just connect the wires and leave them sitting in the dash or screw them in? the tweeters used to sit in a moulded plastic thing.

The wires that will be in ur car will probably be the standard ones. If it is it has a different connection on the wires, u could chop the ends off n connect them to the new speakers or easily run new wires from the headunit. Which ever is easiest for u.

Oh yeh. Sorry what i meant was if i let the speaker just sit in the dash is it going to rattle (even though the dash cover is on) or do i need to screw the speaker into the dash?

I fitted components to mine which meant replacing the speakers in the door and fitting the new tweeters that came with the components. Bit fiddly but well worth it as so much better. I know a Mk2 that had small speakers in instead of tweeters and it was not that great. I bought Kicker and are worth it.

This is the right size though, and it was very simple to fit!

They're 10cm but they're not a regular screw in fitment - custom fit 2-way jobbies are available from the likes of Sony et al (usually only listed as suitable for Polo's of the same age).

Bear in mind the cabling for the door speakers runs through the dash speaker plug - so be careful not to drop the wires down the hole if you want to retain the door speakers :)

Personally, I'd go for a set of components (got some Focals in mine). As Ryan says, mounting the tweeters can be a bit of a headache but not really *that* difficult. Just crack the old tweeters out of the mounting rings and epoxy the new tweeters into the existing rings. Or get the Kenwood custom fit components that come with new mounting rings...

Yes pics would be great mate.

I did replace the standard tweeters with sony ones (just smashed the original ones out of their plastic mould thing and replaced them with the sony ones) but now the sony ones have blown.

lol I'l get pics today then, sorry not been on here in a few days! the wiring I thought was a bugger..

Ive cut the plug thing that went into the old tweeter and just put one wire to the poistive terminal and one to the negative terminal. I planned on doing the same when i buy the new speakers. Is this not what you did?

yeah but I made it awkward, and worked out all 4 wires on each side which were different colours from the ones coming out my headunit.. had to match them up, took ages  still want to see?
