I've had my 143 SE Tech now for a month and my average fuel consumption is 42.7mpg over 2000 miles. Although a big car, I really had hoped for better. The consumption of my previous petrol 1.8 MX5 was 37mpg over similar routes etc. my driving would be 60/40 motorway/ urban. I've had a couple of previous diesels remapped and both economy and performance have improved after the remap. Is this the case with the CR engine, or are they just not very economical?

How many miles has the car done ?

I must say ,I too was expecting better consumption, but the more the miles have gone on, the better is get's and now getting 54-55 at motorway speeds + and my run to work (13 miles all A and B roads) it's returning 62mpg.

Have to say it's not as good as I was told it would be - was in the Alps last week - drove down at mostly 82mph (130kph) with 2 bikes on the roof fully loaded - was averaging 36mpg - towards the end time was getting short and I drove at 90mph and was getting 26mpg!!!

Admittedly the bikes make it about as aerodynamic as a house brick and, you do drive up hill a lot heading up the Alps!

On the way home my Wife decided to fly home with our baby so I could load the bikes and the roof bars etc in the boot - averaged 42mpg at 82 on the way home.

The economy seems to really fall off a cliff over 70.

Had my exeo 3 week now and wasn't happy at all with performance or mpg. My last car was a 2.0 pdtdi jetta and could get 63 mpg if I tried on a 237 mile trip to Scotland, avg worked out about 55/58 sticking between 75 to 80. My first trip in the exeo saw 45 mpg but now I'm getting used to it my last trip of 200 miles got me 54 mpg which I'm happy with. One thing I have noticed is using the cruise control uses more fuel. These fingers are the trip reading ill have proper fingers next time I fill up. As for the power I'm getting used to that too now still feels numb compared to the pd engine but seems to have a larger power range as the pd had a quick shot of power then fizzled out

Exeo 143 2.0 crtdi

So iv just done 480 mile round trip to Ayrshire and fetched back 58 mpg on inboard trip meter and 56mpg calculated from fill to refill. Stuck to a steady 75 where poss on motorway and stuck to speed limits on A roads. Exeo 4door sport tech 143

Hi guys, new here! I'm thinking of buying an Exeo (facelift model) Sport Tech 170 diesel and I must say the MPG is the only thing concerning me now - I've read a few things about the "sport" model in particular having shorter gearing which only gives low 40's mpg at 70mph? Is that right? Seems very poor for a modern diesel engine in what is essentially a mid-sized car nowadays!

I'm looking to move from my Scirocco 2.0tsi to something larger and diesel for the economy but I average around 32mpg (over the last 10k or so!) with daily commute being a 15 mile run with around 10 miles straight A-Road dual-carriageway which I normally average 80-90mph down (it's not very busy). I figure I'm not going to see much better than that if the Exeo is geared that way, is the 170 that much worse than the 143?

Cheers for any advice and nice to "meet" you all! :)

Hi Jimrod,

I'll be honest and say I was disappointed with the MPG from my Sport Tech 170 but basically my missus drives the car about 16 miles each way every day with it being mainly 60mph roads and a short run on the dual carriage way and she manages to get 55mpg.

Driven on the motorway for long distances at 70mph you well get high 40s driven at 80mph you will get low fourties, driven at 90mph it goes back up a bit to mid to high 40s...don't know why it's just what I've found out, owned mine for a year next month.

Tbh with you, it's a very good car, great to drive, nice to be in and I do like the power of the newer CR 170 engines (in the facelift ones as mine is) and the reliability that comes with them.

You can get them mapped for better MPG but I'm happy with mine the way it is.

Also something to note, on long duration services before it's first service at 19,000 miles we were struggling to get high 30s we were really annoyed, after it's service is when we started to see into the 50s, needless to say it's serviced every year now and is due one soon.

Cheers Asonda,

Sounds ok really, I do like most of the things I've seen about the Exeo, it seems a pretty sound and capable car in general with very decent spec on paper. I'm still never sure how some companies come up with their figures - I've been looking at a lot of estate cars in the £13k region and some like the Peugeot 508 quote very good MPG/performance figures while using similarly specced engines to others and weigh 200kg more! The physics don't really add up unless very carefully chosen gear ratios contribute somehow. The basic diesel tech doesn't vary much between manufacturers really.

I've seen a couple of Exeo's and might go look at one tomorrow - thing is it's white :( There's a similarly priced and equally specced black one but it's got 10k more on the clock and is about an hour and a half further away! I'm just not sure I could live with a white car, I'd feel like a rep/site manager of some kind and I do think the black Exeo looks pretty sharp...

The Book figures are only there to compare like for like at point of puchase, the manufacturers do the tests to the same standards so if one manufacturer says 60mpg and one says 50mpg, in the real world, although you won't achieve that high figure, you should be better off with the car with the higher figure than the car with the lower figure.

I have had a million peugeots and I have driven a 508...the Sport Tech Exeo no doubt at all knocks the socks off the 508 handling wise....comfort the 508 wins as it's got a softer ride. Depends on what you want :)

Well I went and test drove it today, very nice and I pick up my new 62 plate white Exeo ST Sport Tech 170bhp next weekend! A bit softer than my Scirocco but very solid and smooth. It's going through the pre-delivery check stuff at a Seat garage so should be ok... Only thing I thought was that the hydraulic steering was quite noisy, especially when stationary, is that normal? Hard to remember coming from a car with electric steering...

Steering & mpg

They are a very solid car and on that front you will not be disappointed.

I thought the 170bhp IS electric power steering and my 143bhp was mechanical!!
Steering:
Mine was a bit noisy due to CV joints but it got fixed, t it still groans a bit under load (no revs) and the dealer says this is normal.

MPG:
I have just traded my Exeo 143 SE Tech because mpg was not great (40/41mpg) 10-15 mile each way. Because of this I have decided to get a petrol. Used my wife's petrol 1.8tsi for a week and I'm averaging 39/40mpg on the same journey. So a no brainer for me. Exeo is a great car, just a little dated and sad to have seen it go but modern petrol's are just as good IMO.

PS: I worked my fuel out the old fashioned way doing maths, not by the MFD.

Cheers for the info Jcbmally!

I know the higher spec models have the variable assistance steering but this certainly felt hydraulic, I could be wrong! I'd hope the CV joints weren't playing up after 25k miles and 2 years but I'm no mechanic so perhaps - I'll call the garage on Monday to make a point of them checking it.

One thing I'd looked into was the MPG as I'm a fairly fast driver on motorways and A-Roads, not so much acceleration but cruising speeds and I read that the facelift models had a higher final drive ratio of 37.5 mph/1000rpm as opposed to 32 I think on the older versions (or that kind of ballpark!) so I hope it'll work out ok, mid 40's+ is good for me.

The car didn't feel particularly fast compared to the Scirocco but it felt planted which is nice too, it reminded me of my old 2000 BMW 530i a bit in terms of overall feel to the drive. I may well get it remapped anyway and now I've read on here there's the Quantum company in Swindon (where I'm from) it may sway me even more! I'd had an old Grande Punto done at Red Dot Racing with their rolling road and it had 184bhp and 300lbs of torque after the map which was extremely potent in a 1250kg car! :)

My steering was really noisy and they replaced the rack under warranty, they are a known 'thing with the Exeo and the Audi that it is 'underneath' the badge.

Mine now still makes a noise but it is quieter, the only thing is I'm sure it's getting noisier again...
