starting to think about going BT again, either in a golf or A3:headhurt:. but need to keep to a tight budget. seen lots of older mk4 golf/a3s (s,t,v reg) for £2-3k downside is 100k+ miles.
this wouldnt be a problem if rebuilding engine would it? thinking of new pistons, possible going 1.9l, rods, valves and springs, metal waterpump.
is there anything else worthwhile changing? not planning on getting massive turbo,, ihi again would be nice.
advice would be welcome :)

There would be no problem with that mileage engine especially if you are stripping it. Just make sure the oil pump was good and the ori bits were not run dry at all. As a matter of course a new pump is a good idea, rebore and hone (040 oversise imo), possibly a crank grind and a good set of shells, big end and mains. Depending on the pistons and rods will dictate how far you can go boost wise but most cheap rods from china are pretty good now. And pistons, i'd go for something like JE maybe.
