Engine management light flashing and car misfiring

Need advice guys!!!

I bought my Cupra about a month ago and was driving along last night when suddenly the engine management light started flashing on my display and the engine was stuttering very badly and felt like it was gonna conk out any second.

I drove home straight away and am not gonna drive it until I get it to the place I bought it. I have a 12 month warranty which will hopefully cover the problem. If not, I really can't afford to be spending a lot of money on repairs at the moment :(

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? it's not the oil, I checked that and the it's at the required level.

I'm really worried and unhappy about this, especially as I only bought the car a month ago :(

P.S The car was last serviced in 2006 so I'm aware that needs to be done ASAP!

Sounds like a coil-pack blown ... have a search on here for how to check which one's gone :)

*EDIT* Forgot to say, if it is coil-pack, not sure if it'll be covered under warranty as it's classed as a consumable similar to spark plugs I think, but worth having a go :)

Is the expensive to have repaired? In an ideal world the fault can be rrepaired under warranty and then I can get a service done - my luck is so so bad!!! :(

I will take it to where I bought it after work and see what they say.

About £24 each I think ... best bet is get it to the place you got it from, get them to diagnose it (should show as cylinder misfire on VAGCOM/diagnostics machine) and try to get them to replace it under warranty/goodwill :)

I think even if it is a consumable it should be covered under the sale of goods act 1982, all products should be free from defects for a set period after purchase, even on somthing such as this...

Thanks guys, I will see what they say later on when I take it to the place I bought it.

I really need to get it serviced too, I hope it's not too pricey these days!

They had no service history for the car when I bought it but have since had all the paperwork through.

The only way I was gonna buy the car was if I had a 12 month warranty to cover the fact that they had no service history with it. I have the service history now but I thought the 12 month warranty would be good peice of mind and re-assurance that nothing was dodgy.

I'm REALLY worried now :(

Just a note, Seat def replace coil packs under warranty - have had 2 myself. They will only replace the faulty 1 though.....when one goes it's a pretty sure sign the rest will follow soon anyways! You should also get 18/24 months warranty on the new coil pack - will keep going even when the warranty runs out on the whole car.

I'd get it serviced ASAP.

Then take it from there.......Have you had a look at the air filter? Does it look in good condition?

Its only about £60 fitted if you can't do it yourself but it is a really easy job (5 mins) on three of them... but it's probably sods law it's the awkward one. I learned this lesson the hard way but I wouldn't worry 2 much if I were you. If they were prepared to give you a 12 month warranty I'm sure they can be persuaded to replace a coil pack free of charge. Good luck!

You guys know your stuff!

It was the coil pack that was faulty and they have repaired it under warranty. Also, they have booked my car in to have the tracking checked as it's pulling to the left slightly which I wont be charged for :)

I will pick it up today, get the tracking checked and then get it serviced! Thanks for the help, it's all in hand and will all be sorted now :)

i think it needs it at the 80k service but check the book. treat it to a decent service so you get off on the right foot... or better still buy an uprated panel air filter and fit it instead of the seat one. it makes the car a little more responsive as it allows better air flow.

your engine will love you

I looked at the service history and the 'toothed belt' has not been changed since the car was made (it's 2003 reg). It also says in the owners manual that it needs to be checked / changed at around 60k miles.

My current mileage is 73k and the car hasn't been serviced since 2006 when the mileage was 56k.

It seems that I need a service done very soon and the belt changed at the same time. There is no way I can afford that so close to xmas so it will have to be done in January. I hope everything is ok until then!

I know all about being skint, what with a littl'un on the way, but I would be seriously considering getting it done now using a credit card if I were you, if that is an option. You can get cards with interest free periods on purchases to see you through til after the new year and it means you don't run the risk of killing your engine should it snap - you will have considerably more to worry about than the cost of a cambelt if it does decide to give up the ghost! Just use the card to get the cambelt/service done and then cut it up, and make sure you pay it back before the interest kicks in.
