ABS doesn't actually stop you any quicker though. It just stops the wheels from locking up to give you the ability to steer around the problem.

At the end of the day, none of the current electronic aids available will stop people crashing if they insist on driving like complete tools. They're just aids to help you, not to stop you doing something stupid.

Yea exactly, you might be able to stop a car quicker without but it's designed to let you keep control of the steering. I'm not sure if the ABS brakes individual wheels or not, but in theory it could (like it does with ESP) and you wouldn't be able to do that without an ABS.

have a look under the bonnet for a big black box with a load of brake lines going into it - should be on the LHS

I'm not saying I've never been caught out but even if you are a car behind if you see there's pedestrians anywhere near a pedestrian crossing (some step out without so much as a glance over their shoulder) you need to be prepared to stop. It suggests that the driver in front was not using enough caution, but therefore neither were you. Zig zags are there for a reason on the approaches to give unobscured view. Not having a go. But emergency stop and you go into the back of someone still equals your fault.

If the car is fitted with ABS you will see the ABS check light briefly when you turn on the ignition.

My father's old 1.2 S on an 03 plate didn't have ABS.

I was just about to say that too, turn ignition on but not the starter and when the lights come up, look for the ABS one :)

Stomp on the pedal really fast and hard like a kid has run out in front of you and see if you get a popping noise and a judder in the pedal. If you get a loud screetch and 2 black skid marks you don't have ABS.

Talking about brakes. My brakes on mine just feel utter ****. Braking from 40-50mph and modrate braking force, The pedel just seems to fit a wall, The pedal gets pretty hard and the brakes feel very wooden in feel and the car doesnt really wanna stop to well. The discs on the front have some wear but not alot at all, And the rears are new, The padals seems to have plenty left on to, Dunno if they have glazed up or not. But deffo gonna change the discs and pads up front, As they are a joke!.

I tested my ABS yesterday on my driveway as it was icey, Even at 10mph you can feel the pedel judder as its working.

i think its only facelift 1.2's that have ABS. my 02 plate one didnt

Sorry, but wrong again ;)

I had a pre-facelift 04 plate 1.2 SX with ABS. I believe it was only the pre-facelift 'S' models that came without it, which when they changed to facelift and renamed 'reference' they updated it with ABS.

Tell ya what, will give you half a point :cartman:
