Driving a diesel for those journey is a bad idea and may lead to turbo failure. The turbo will get clogged up and seize the vnt leading to overboost. Diesels aren't designed for that. Stick with petrol

Good advice! My FR1.8T gives 30-32 mpg on journeys like you describe. I haven't been able to try it on longer trips.

I drive the 1.9tdi fr to work everyday along a busy traffic road of 3 miles there and 3 miles back. mpg has dropped significantly since I started but still touching 40mpg average.
I do sometimes think that I should have opted for the petrol given the current circumstances but at the time of buying I had not secured the job!
honest opinion from a diesel driver in the same situation....go petrol, the added cost will be minimal and the ride/noise less harsh

I do Simalur trips in my Cupra tdi 7 miles each way to work and back on a busy traffic road so start stop all way to work and to behonest I wish I had of gone for the petrol Cupra but saying that my Cupra is still pullin out about 40 to 45mpg on that trip but for the last 6 months the intercooler has been leaking (boost leak) and car is also mapped so I'd say mpg isn't as good as it was before the leak. people say it won't do them any good well it hasn't done my car any harm in the 2.5 years of doing those trips.

Whats your average mileage? I do about 10k a year, I find myself spending around £120ish a month on fuel, mainly local commuting in a stage 2 20vt FR.

I do approx 10 12 k a year .....from what I can work out the money I save from buyin a petrol cancels out the saving on insurance of the diesel. An if I was to get a diesel an do short journeys would it not be the same as petrol thats how I understand it but not too sure

ive had a cupra 1.8t and i now i own a cupra tdi and even on short journeys your still always do better out of the diesel.
the 1.8t takes just as long to warm up as the tdi as well.
on a whole tank off boost fairly short journeys in the 1.8t the best i ever managed was 360 miles out of a whole tank, fairly short journeys in the tdi driving how ever the worst tank i have had was about 430 miles out of a tank.

i do miss the 1.8t a lot but purely for the sound alone really so paying for a sound is really pointless hence the move to diesel.

Not sure what plans you have, but when i was looking direct line didn't cover any mods if you're under 25. I'd get petrol if I was doing that mileage

Unlike the night owl above, I don't do night shift and probably should cycle but the laziness of being a teenager has hit me quite bad haha

Sounds like your commute is much the same length as mine - I get about 30mpg out of my 1.8t but it's half city driving, half on the A34 where it's too much fun not to use the turbo ;)

My daily drive to work is 6.2 miles and then back.

My 2008 1.9 tdi FR has covered 19,500 doing that journey for 5.5 years without any fault or turbo failure. Ave mpg is 44 in winter and 53 summer.

Love the mid range punch of the tdi and low insurance. Only thing I miss is the warm up time in the colder months as the temp gauge has barely moved time I turn off.

Bear in mind 20vt is more on tax and insure generally too. However, trees something that much more enjoyable, to me, about the feel and sound of petrol over diesel.

rocking a 1.9tdi pd100 and I got and average of 50.4mpg over 520 miles of mixed driving

All depends what you want....

A remap on a diesel will be quicker than a remap on a 1.8t.... torque is what you want people ;)

Debatable tbh, a stage 1 on an Fr gets you around 200bhp and a decent torque figure. Go stage 2 and you'll see comparable torque to stage 1 pd130 and 240bhp, which you'd need injectors, turbo etc for on a pd130/160 to see. Also you can rev higher than 5500rpm.
