I'd say steer well clear! Injectors and dpf failure are also rife amongst diesels

NOPE!

The problems you're on about ar on the PD170 engine only. MK4 FR engine PD130 is totally fine. TDI technology has gone common rail injection now and DPF problems are very rare in fact I don't know of any at all on CR engines.

I drive 3miles to work and 3 back week days in my tdi FR with no trouble, but at the weekends I rip the arse out of it so probably cancels out! :D I do sometimes wish I had opted for the petrol but I bought the car expecting a 150 mile weekly commute but I got a job very close to home In the end.

nah the mk4 beeza don't have a dpf, 100% sure buddy!

Well that's good then, it's just another thing to go wrong ! *relief* :)

I'd go for the diesel regardless of the mileage, just make sure you really rag it now and again at weekends.

I just love the mid range power, not having to make it scream if you want to go fast anywhere.

Same here, never going petrol again even though this CR170 is only doing 4k miles a year.

It all depends on what u want out of the car ie not just running costs.

Ie if u want to play about with your car an want more power in the future the petrol is defo the way to go.
The tdi pd lump is far to expensive to get high power out of where the 1.8t engines would cost a lot less to
Power up

I would have expected tuning prices to be relatively similar considering the internals on the pd160's are strong enough to run high power?
Then it's just the same items as a petrol that need upgrading.

Out of interest, how much are we talking to get to what power?

We'll pd160 Cupra to get running stage 2 so about 230 to 250 bhpish

Your talking big turbo upgrade £1300
Single mass fly wheel an clucthc conversion £800
Uprated intercooler £240
Hard boost pipes or uprated pipes £300
Stage two remap £400
Exhaust system £400
Uprated injector nozzles or injectors £300 each so £1200

That's about it tobe runnin a nice smooth reliable stage 2 to stage2+ Cupra tdi
Then there's the prop that u won't e able to grip the road so ull need uprated gear box and engine mounts at £300 an uprated dog bone mount £40 which petrol might also need

Then the £800 limited slip diff that's needed also to make use of the power.

So all in all a lot of money plus these prices are u fitting it all by your self not paying someone if ur paying someone add at least £800 for all that with labour.

Yes u know petrola will need some of the same mods but they come in at cheeper prices for some reason

I have been seriously looking into this myself to see what I need to get to my ultimate target of 220+ bhp from a 1.9 TDi PD cupra engine.

Im not too sure if you are a bit biased with those figures though...

Yes a turbo upgrade will be required for reliable power of over about 210 bhp, but you don't mention that you can exchange your standard turbo for an uprated/hybrid item to save £100's.

Again, clutch and SMF will probably be required past 200bhp, but it seems people on here are using non-branded clutch/flywheels with excellent results for less than half of that.

Intercooler - If using a standard Cuupra TDi front mounted Intercooler and its not leaking, I believe they are capable of 300 bhp before needing uprating.

Hard boost pipes are only really needed if you are going for big boost/BHP or your standard hoses are leaking. Not essential by any means.

A decent remap will be around £400 agreed if this is your first map, but Im guessing most folk will be upgrading from stage 1, so most companies only charge a nominal fee for a re-map upgrade, normally £50-£75 if you have already purchased an earlier stage.

Exhaust prices again vairy from a full system at around £400 like you said, to a simple mufflerectomy , keeping the standard adequate exhaust at £150 or less. TBH, with TDi tuning, I would be tempted to NOT spend too much money on an exhaust system as diesel noise is not one of the main things most people want to enhance LOL!

Again, standard injectors are capable of a safe 230bhp so probably wouldn't need changing, but beyond that, darkside sell injectors on an exchange basis capable of up to 380+bhp for £675 for a set of 4. Slightly less than the unnessasary £1200 you say.

Yep, LSD's and handling mods are always of benefit, but were talking 250php max here for the mods listed, not 500!

TBH, unless you are driving like a total loon, or are a regular at your local track, LSD's won't give a massive benefit for their cost.

Reasonably priced bushes/ARB's will provide value for money, but personally, that's as far as I would go.

I could well be wrong though, as I'm yet to tune my car to this state, however this Is what I have discovered from doing a bit of research.

Well that's the thing a lot of people are too unreal with the resault a they reckon they can actually get ur people sayin stage 1 can get them upto 210 bhp which it carnt.

Yes you can get your turbo Hybrided but from what I have researched it's not a very good way to go yes a lot of people do go hybrid but the boost spikes they make on a tdi is unreal ask any diesel tuner and they will tell ya.

So firstly a hybrid is not the way forward yes it's a cheeper I option.

Standerd seat sport intercooler is capable of 300 bhp on a petrol a diesel will blow it too bits at stage 2 most leak at stage one same as boost pipes.

Ok injectors have gone down quite abit since I last looked into them but they are still required to get above 230bhp.

And an LSD well my stage one Cupra tdi can not grip do whay a stage 2 would do I don't know
