General query over Rear discs/pads on MK4 Ibiza Cupra

Hey,

I have MK4 Ibiza Cupra TDI i've had from new (57). Cars about 25 miles short of 30k so getting serviced shortly. I was warned at the 20k service the rear discs/pads would only last about 8-9k.

Just had 2 new tyres fit and they commented saying max of 3k miles left on them. I've had a look and the discs are very worn down and have a pretty deep lip so i'm certain they are at the end of their life.

My question, is it normal for the rear discs to wear as quickly as this? The front discs and pads are in pretty good nick. At 20k I was told they were less than 1/3 worn so i'm surprised by the rears.

It brakes pretty damn well when I want to but generally just cruise around. I get much longer life from my Scooby's Brembo brakes and its got more weight to stop, not to mention more power.

Thoughts?

Oh yea...are they expensive to replace?

Im still on my original rear pads, with 60k on the clock. Depends on the type of driving you do, mine is pretty much 80% motorway, 15% urban, and 5% trackdays.

Mmm.That doesn't sound right at all.If anything,it's the fronts that should be wearing much quicker.
My 130 Sport's had heavily lipped/corroded rear discs for the past 2 years,given an advisory notice at it's first 2 mot's and mentioned at both services. Still legal though.They are the originals,pads and discs and mileage is 68,000 miles.

I'd get a second opinion(from an mot inspector),about the thickness/corrosion on your discs.Mine look a mess,but they work that's all that matters.

I live in the sticks so its all A/B back roads. I just find it strange how the rears have worn so much and not the fronts, like maybe the bias is wrong ? Although I would think if it was I would be able to tell with the way it brakes.

They need changing so can't be helped but have never known rears go quicker than fronts in 13 years of driving quick cars.

Torquemonster: I've looked at the rear discs myself and for once agree with the garage. The discs really are pretty well worn and the pads don't have much left on them.

I'll have them check they are not binding on or something stupid when it gets serviced.

I changed the pads on my Cupra about 40k, i really can't see you would need new ones yet. Like you say the fronts should wear much quicker, i went through 2 sets of fronts before the rears needed doing. Having said that when they were changed they started knocking like a bitch (non OEM pads) so they only lasted 500 miles, d'oh.

That's well weird then! Maybe I'm driving the car the wrong way around all this time lol Wondered why the lights were crap in the dark

I changed my rears at about 20k and they were quite worn. I didn't notice any difference after changing them except less squeaking The rears don't do that much work, but still seem to wear quite alot

My rears have had to be stripped twice in the past due to them binding(very slightly).Garage said it was just a build up of crap.Maybe your calipers need looking at.

I'll definitely be getting them checked. Hoping to get the car in this week so should find out shortly. I'll report back what they say. I'm going to VolksParts, a local independent that did my last service and seem really good.

Mine had new front pads and rear pads and discs at about 20k. Has to be said that the rears were totally shot when they were changed, with deep score marks in the discs. Think the car might have been driven slightly hard by its previous owner!

Seems to be getting much better wear all round from the replacement pads from Badger5.
