Got supplied the wrong oil filter

Just thought id start a thread to have a rant about euro car parts and their ignorant employees. I planned on doing an oil and filter change after breaking in the engine fully, so id done about 2000miles. Didnt want to take it to the dealership because of the cost and its not a difficult job to do myself and they wouldnt supply me with the filter unless i had the service done there. I called a few car part places, then euro car parts said not only they could get me this filter but they had it at their store down the road, so off i went, did the oil and filter change. I then went on a 300mile journy the next day only to arrive to find the engine oil below the minimum. Filled the oil up again and looked for leaks over the next day convinced that i had done something wrong in partcular not done the oil sump nut up properly but then after checking the number of the filter realized that the supplied me with the wrong one. It was actually one for a suzuki and they dont even do the seat one(btw its the mk5 fr).:censored: Was the oil leaking out of the oil filter somehow under preassure?

I then had to make the 300mile journey back so i slightly over filled the engine and made it back home slowly. After getting home and checking the oil i realised that the oil was STILL over the maximum.

Ive got no idea why this is happening, needless to say im not using the car untill seat can get the proper part in but i was just wondering why the loss of oil on the way up and not the way back??? The only thing that i can think of is on the way up i was driving fast and having a great time giving it the bees but on the way back it was a slow and steady pace

Is this to do with the oil preassure difference between driving hard and driving slow and easy? Maybe the filter cant handle the high oil preassure of hard driving and it leaks?

Also how much damage have i done by driving 300miles with oil leaking and then another 300miles with too much oil in it?? Have i just totally f**ked my car up????

Was there oil all over the filter when you checked? If not then it can't be leaking mate unless it is sucking it through the air filter? Have you checked that? Otherwise I have no explanation mate. EUROS are renowned for supplying incorrect parts. We use them for all our vehicles and through great head aches and trial and error we have finally got them to start sending the right parts. Considering we spend about a million quid with them a year on parts if not more it has been an uphill battle. Even getting parts for my previous ibizas they always supplied the wrong parts and I have to go back for the right ones. Go to a VW parts store as the parts are the same and they should have them in stock.

Did you fill the filter with oil before fitting it?
This can make a difference, but shouldn't make a massive difference.

Good point. If I can remember the filter itself should hold almost a litre of oil so failing to put oil in there before fitting could result in it taking longer to settle hence the drop in level.

If its a TSi your talking about the oil filter has a special valve on the bottom of it a the filter is inverted, using an incorrect oil filter can and probably will damage the engine as oil pressure wont be retained.

We may be a little costlier than doing it yourself, but at least we know what we are doing.

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but, it sounds like you have a newish Ibiza and changed the oil and filter before the first service was due. Nothing really wrong with that idea - but sourcing non VAG supplied oil and a filter from a non-VAG outlet quite early in a car model's life is just not wise. You say that Seat would not supply you with a filter - maybe you should buy your service parts at another Seat dealer who is willing and happy to sell anyone that comes in the correct part for their car. I also must admit that I do agree with the poster that said that ECP (and GSF and probably others as well) do tend to hold a rationalised range of parts, so if the part "fits" that its okay by them!

I'd suggest that anyone that wants to save money by buying service parts from ECP, GSF, etc - do their homework first, in this case read the VAG number off the filter fitted to the car and don't walk out with something that has a differant VAG p/n on it.
