ta dude, its not as nice looking as the pioneer, but i think id prefer the more precticality of the integration. besides, they are roughly the same price as the Avic.

Do theses units have the maps stored on HDD and not DVD like the old style ones.

I guess they have TV input options and play DVD's

i cant find much details on the other than on Shedbay. but thay maybe modded to play DVDs

maps stored on hard disc, play dvd's etc.

To fit the MFD you have to change the whole instrument cluster (and then program the car through VAG-COM), which isn't cheap.

The MFD3 works independently though, you can install it without the big screen in the cluster.

Cool thats all I needed to know.... Cheers

i might be digressing too much, however.

on shedbay there are loads of MFD3's mainly from VW's is it possible to change the splash screen, perhaps during a firmware upgrade.

from reading on the vwnavi its not clear if it is or not - was possible on MFD2

I don't think you can ... and as far as I'm aware you can't flash an MFD2 either!

Back on topic ... there is a new cut-down variant coming from VAG called the RNS310 - it is a budget version of the RNS510 (mfd3) with a CD instead of DVD and no hard disk drive. So you put satnav maps and music onto an SD card (up to 32Gb) and play CDs as normal. Seems absolutely perfect to me.

Unless I read it wrong someone said earlier that you have to have the car standing still to change the function of the display to audio. I have the RNS510 and even when driving you can change function, just hold the top button of the stalk and it goes to the list then choose whatever you want. I use the audio function quite a bit as I have about 15GB of music on the unit.

Cant see the fascination with watching DVDs in the car, maybe im too old but I prefer a nice comfy sofa and my big telly...

Yeah that was me, it was written in a rush, I had the "setup" display in mind.

I couldn't care less about DVD's either. I do care about sound quality though, and this HU is the only that will allow me to fully use an iPod (with a digital connection and not analog as all other do) filled with lossless audio, as well as connect to my external sound processor (when it gets installed along with the rest of the stuff). :)

the original poster already has bluetooth so would not need to change the mfd.

it is simply plug and play, and obviously a sat nav surround fascia is also required (under £10).

dont worry about that too much unless your really anal about such stuff.
the splash screen is only ever displayed for about 2 seconds from cold start only.

True, but the question I answered wasn't asked by the OP. if one has the small screen in the instrument cluster and wants to upgrade to the MFD, then they have to change the whole cluster.

MFD= Multi Function Display in the instrument cluster
MFD2/3=Multimedia Head Unit.

:)

Ditto on the splash screen, the VW unit lights red anyway so there's no difference there.

Hi Guys

I managed to get the factory bluetooth connected to my JVC AVX810 on the weekend. Pretty simple really. In the quadlock connector there is a green plug with two wires going into it, black and white. This is the sound output from the bluetooth. I just cut the plug off and connected an RCA jack to the wires, white positive and black negative. Then i connected an RCA female to 2 male lead to give me two outputs and connected these jacks to the AV Input on my head unit. The TEL Mute wire in the quadlock was not much use when connected to the TEL Mute on the head unit, due to the fact the signal stays on when you have answered the phone so the unit stays muted and you cant hear the caller, so i didnt connect it. When the phone rings i have to rely on me seeing it on the dash, or noticing my phone ringing in my pocket (have it on vibrate). I then select the AV Input and voila, i can hear the caller.

Job Done

nice 1 mate the answer we all been waiting for
do the steering wheel phone buttons still work mate?
and can you still use the mfd for phonebook ect?
on my bluetooth u get a ringing sound out of the speakers or mic , do you still get that?
pics will be good ;)
can you still dial a call from your steering wheel buttons?

Everything works the same. The bluetooth system is independant of the head unit. All you need is to connect the sound output to your stereo somehow like i have. If you select the AV input on my head unit then press the button on the steering wheel for the voice commands the lovely woman who lives in the dash speaks to me again!!!
Eveything works as before. The only problem as i mentioned before is when you receive a call. You have to select the input first.

Cheers

I did take some pics, but my pc has just died with them all on it. If i get it going i will post them. On the top of the factory head unit is a diagram showing what all the wires on the back are.

OK guys. Got a couple of pics of the connectors in the quadlock. Dont know how to put them here, so i can email them to someone if they know how to do it.

Cheers

OK. First pic shows the diagram on the seat headunit. Top left corner is the bluetooth + and -. Second pic shows the Quadlock when disconnected. If you push the green plug it should move backwards out of the lock. There are only the two wires in this plug so you shouldnt get mixed up, White is + and black is -. These are the ones i cut and connected a single phono jack to. Third pic just shows the stock headunit connectors.
The output from the bluetooth is mono i believe so unless you get a 1 female to 2 male phono lead as well the input on to your new headunit will not be output from all speakers.
For the phono lead i just cut the end of one of a pair i had and twisted the wires together. Biggest problem i had was getting the headunit back into the dash with the mass of wires behing it, but i had that problem when i first installed the stereo!!!

Any questions let me know.

Cheers

Nik
