Fair enough, I just love the noise and power and wasting fuel..

you'd think i was a petrol head

oh wait....
:p
:D

Don't get me wrong mate, I love petrols too but just can't afford to insure a proper performance petrol atm.

Trust me if you drive one, you'll find it hard to find any car that compares for similar insurance. And thats before you remap it.
As for sound all you need is the backbox chopping out and it sounds great. Very crude but cheap and good results.
My remapped pd130 will rev to just below 5k but not much point in going all the way as peak power is around 4k i believe.

You have obviously never driven a DTI, when driving a TDI you ned not bother with the red line, if you take it to it you are wasting your time. much better to change up at 3.5 to 4 and ride the torque again through all 6 gears. the 130 TDI does over 80mph @ '2.5k revs IIRC

I Have my 20vt for weekends only as I drive a 1.9CDTI 150 all week for work.

You say you will be doing big miles, then it's got to be a TDI for the saving on fuel.

I love this place.

I really do think I will enjoy getting a TDI overa petrol for insurance for a few years.

I've gotten some great advice imo.

I know the engine torque max in diesels is roughly 2k rpm, but sometimes you just love 4.5/5krpm for sound.

Does the TDI 130 have 6 gears? 80mph @ 2.5 is :censored: brilliant for me. I go away at weekends and do many motorway miles between 70-90.

Anything else interesting?! :D

What year did the 130 TDI sports come in?

Need to find a good one around 4k. Be tough though!

EDIT: I'm going to guess 2002... lol

Think they start on 52 plates and were replaced by the FR on 04 plates. You will find a few 04 sports but the majority will be 52-53 plates.
Should find a good example for £4k

That doesnt sound too bad.
FR is the same car just a few minor changes and a new name. Think one of the nly major differences is the gear ratios.

I think the FR is higher on Insurance group? Plus, I can't spend anymore than 4k anyway. Thats an overstrected budget aswell! :p

I'll test drive a 130 TDI soon as well. ALso try a petrol. I'll give my feedback - I think I know I'm going to love the TDI though!

I thought I'd posted but I'd left the screen on didn't refresh before my post. If you look for cars on AutoTrader/PistonHeads be careful because a lot of people say they're 130's when they aren't. 130s ALL have 6 gears no matter what people might try and tell you. Good luck car hunting!

Thanks for all the info guys.

Are there any common problems with the 1.9 TDI though? Anything to be worried about?

Thanks for all the help.

At 18 I had an 02 1.4 Sport 100hp, and within a year I traded it in for a TDI 130. It was fun for a month or two, then I got bored. The tuning possibilities on the 1.4 are rubbish, while the TDI has bags of potential. Go TDI, you definately won't regret it.

As for problems, no not really! The water pumps are known to go so make sure it was changed when the cambelt was done. Other than that, the TDI is a solid lump that will go on for hundreds of thousands of miles!
