My LCR gear stick has become discoloured/coating worn off
Its the ring that is around the top of the gear stick between the leather gaitor and the disc that tells you which gear your in
According to the parts guy in Aberdeen its all one piece but according to the ETKA drawings it looks like several.
I'm not convinced by the parts guys 'knowledge'
Has anyone changed this part?
I think it just pops off and is part of the disc at the top
The whole gear stick is £110 and I aint paying that for this little disc

The ring is part of the gearknob. The standard gearknob is, like, £12?

Alternately, I've heard of really tight gits would have just peeled all the black paint off and live with that...

I'm penny pinching here but not that bad,lol
did think about painting it though;)
How do you remove the knob?
Is it pull up the gaitor and unclip the knob job?

On an LCR, where the gaitor meets the centre consol, underneath the leather there are two plastic "levers" press them inwards towards each other and the frame around the bottom of the gaitor lifts upwards. Pull it up inside out and you'll see the one0-use clip around the gear lever mentioned about.

Swear at that clip for about 20mins and it comes right off...

I had the same problem - thought about replacing the gearknob - too expensive IMO.......so......I reconditioned it myself !

It came out just like new !

Use a small screwdriver (one of the ones used to open watches etc),
prise off the disc on the top of the stick(with the gear numbers thereon) -
it's only held on with adhesive & will come off !..Be careful not to score the disc !

Once you have the disc off, you will see a screw retainer underneath for the ring surround. Remove it.

Once this is done, rub it down with some light sandpaper, use plastic primer, dry it. smooth it and paint it, (black in my case to go with the LCR interior).

Reverse the forementioned procedure & Bobs yer uncle.....just like new ! :D

I like the idea of coopra r as my stick is wearing but it is also wearing on the side so looks like a new one or live with it for me. I agree anything over £100 for this is a bit much.

Seat Sport ones can be had for £50-£60 on ebay, but come up rarely.
I got a new, Alu/Leather boxed one for £60 posted.

I'm a bit of a stickler.....but the only problem with those is that they don't match the red/black interior of an LCR !

I think it matches fine, you thinking of a different one?
Similar to this one.

No mate...that's the one I was thinking of - I just preferred the red/black of the original - just a matter of taste I suppose. :)

At the price of a replacement mind you :( - I would have the Seat Sport one, if I were to consider renewing.

But, as I said, my recon worked a treat - as long as the leather on the Gearknob is ok, its well worth the small effort to retain the OE - It's really easy to do. :D

Thanks to Coopra R:)

I have removed the top disc (with a knife) with was glued on and unscrewed the philips screw on the top and the 'offending' disc came off:)
As coopra R said, clean this up, undercoat and paint (still waiting for this to dry)
This should be refitted tomorrow

I thought it wears off if you wear a ring on your left hand. If thats the case, won't it just wear off again if you paint it and continue to wear a ring? (I'm going to do mine after reading this thread, but I don't wear a ring so I guess I'll be ok.)
