Hi all, I have had a search on here and a flick through Google but I can't find much info about this. I know that fitting a downpipe on to the K04 seems to give good improvements by letting the turbo spool quicker if IIRC and has the added bonus of making it sound louder, but what can be had by fitting an up pipe?

I suppose the questions should really be, can you fit one, can you actually buy one and is it worth it?

This might sound stupid but I have never looked into anything like this before.

I did read a thread on here about an ATR up pipe for the K03 but that appeared to relocate the turbo to the top of the engine.
 
To be honest, it's probably the charge pipe that I am referring to and wanting to replace and getting muddled up. What are the benefits to changing the charge pipe or debaffling one? I am not sure that you can buy an upgraded one?

I assume when replacing the charge pipe, it's worth doing this one also from the turbo to the charge pipe?

The hose is worth doing as the original is softer and could collapse under pressure, there has been a lot of talk about the pro's and cons of debaffling the pipe have a search and you should get some more info.

Only the TIP can collapse - the other hoses are under positive pressure.

To be honest, unless I can find a cheap one that someone made earlier, I don't think I'll bother. I like the idea of a louder and quicker spool up but I think i'll leave it at uprading the air inlet (TIP) and exhaust outlet (DP) which should achieve a bit more noise and quicker spool up itself.
 
Yep, sometimes people look to change too many things that really aren't necessary. An uprated TIP, DV and air filter with a good exhaust system should do everything you need.
 
After a little more digging and searching through ATP & Pro-Imports websites, it appears the up pipe doesn't do alot. ATP's kit allows an engine running a K03 to relocate the turbo to the top of the engine to install a larger turbo (they reckon there's not enough room where it's supposed to sit).

Pro-Imports specify that their 'up pipe' allow you to bolt any 1.8t downpipe to a k04.

K04-2X Turbo Exhaust Up-pipe. Allows any factory or aftermarket VW MKIV 1.8T downpipe to be used with a K04-2X turbo. Up-pipe includes hardware & gaskets.

So the moral of my findings and as lordgibbness says, stick with TIP (check), DV (check), Air Filter (check) and Turbo Back System which is yet to be installed.
 
Only the TIP can collapse - the other hoses are under positive pressure.

They wont collapse, instead rip/leak and may pop off.
The turbo to charge pipe hose was designed by forge for people from this website having failures at 50k +.
This is also the only hose made from fluorosilicone to withstand the temperatures of the super heated air from the turbo.
This is a hose that can fail, proven
 
Not with upper boost hoses no.
But lower intercooler pipes for connecting original SMIC sometimes blow off, an s shaped kind of one.
No harm in doing charge pipe to IC though as there is still a lot of heat here too.
Replacing original hoses i think is a good idea if fitted correctly you have pretty good piece of mind on the leak and failure side

I'd say so. If I wasn't tying up all my money in a house purchase I'd be adding a full 3" exhaust system, stiffer suspension and ARBs. As it stands, beyond my current mods, I'll probably only be uprating the TIP now.

No performance gain but increased durability and longevity.
As for materials of the pipes, and having replaced all vac and boost lines apart from N75 to actuator, i found the silicon to be much harder to remove after its been on in comparsion with OEM pipes.
Could just be luck though
