Misfire - not plugs or coil packs?!

Yes mate. I don't notice any misfire symptoms when driving the car, only on idle. I've not tried live driving and logging the data. Ill try and get out later and do it.

The numbers you are getting are high however, if its not happening under load then I don't think at this point you are causing any damage.

I have been getting idle misfires too but nowhere near as many as what you have seen.

I did at one point try new (different) plugs which gave me 33 misfires within the time frame before reset. I put the BKREIX7's back in and it went right back down to more like 3 or 4.

However (touch wood). I seem to be fine last time out.

I know you said you swapped coil packs round, did you swap the spark plug round too? I realise you changed plugs but did you try plugs in different cylinders and have them all torqued down, none looser than others?

As you only get a problem on cyl2. Then for me it can only be; cylinder compression, spark plug, coil pack wiring harness, coil pack or injector.

How about with engine running have a mess about with wiring harness and listen to engine note? Just a simple check to see if it is a failing wire within he harness.

Just clutching at straws really and realise how frustrating it is for you.

Been out for a drive and logged with VCDS. Stops misfiring when you drive the car. Starts again on tick over. I had a cheeky single misfire on cylinder 3 and that's it.

The amount you have been getting isn't right and needs curing. However, yours is doing the same as mine then ie I get none whatsoever when driving (albeit yours are much worse whilst idling)

I still "think" it's an injector fault. I await the cause and rectification.

I had the same issue with an idle missfile on cly4, i changed plus and coils etc but the fault was with the injector changed it on cly4 for a new one and this resolved the idle misfire, havent had one on idle since :)

When you changed your injector , did you have carbon deposits on the end? the spray pattern end that is?

Ok all. I'm just listing out bits I need to give the injector replacement a go. I'm going to clean the valves too If they need doing whilst its off.

Any pointers or things to consider replacing/checking whilst manifold is off?

I'm going to get:
New intake manifold rubber gasket
Blue Injector seals for the other 3 injectors (injector to fuel rail)
Rs4 valve? Whilst its off

Anything I've missed?

injector removal tool , a lot of paitence , small hands , and you might as well change the RS 4 valve while you are there .

Hi rob,
Thanks for the info. Is the rs4 valve the best option or is there anything else to consider? I'm sure I've seen a site that sells alternatives?
I've looked for the inj removal tool rob but all I can see is a tool for vag diesel injectors. Any pointers?

Thanks mate.

Hi Rob, i may still have a picture if i can find it i will post it up but there wasnt any excessive carbon build up, i had Steve @ Statllers do the work and he said it was pretty normal build up

I can't buy the injector blue seals separately, that fit into fuel rail. I'm presuming its ok to re use the ones in the injectors I'm not removing?

Haven't read the full thread but have same issue with my tdi fr a mis fire on cyclinder three. I had my car recalled 13 months ago and so parts are covered under warranty. Vag com said injector fault, so far seat have replaced the wiring loom which hasn't fixed it and now are changing some other part. Seat say the injector is fine.
Nt sure if the recall affected your car, if it did all parts are covered by 24 month warranty

It was definitely worth checking mate. Glad to hear that's ok.

Out of interest and for future reference, what were the figures?
