Hi Jon,

I spent a day being tutored on the roads as if I was a Police T5 driver (he is AIM and ROSPA qualified etc) and this included whizzing up and down that road with the cat and fiddle at the top. It was amazing how many bad habits I had and how badly I was driving the car. She was a different machine in his hands - faster, sharper braking with no fade it was awe inspiring. The second day he spent with me at Donnington in an M3. I got about 4 hours on the track and it was the best thing i have ever done. By the end of the day no one could get past me and I was leaving them on the corners.

It has really opened my eyes, I have bought the Police manuals for driving since and been practising. Weird thing is I am driving more confidently, getting better MPG and the car feels like new again.

I used to think I was quite a good driver but he destroyed all of that in less than an hour, now I know I have a lot to learn and it will never end but it is something i am really enjoying doing. Going to get some more practise in then book another day of tuition!

What surprises me the most is that a car like ours in the right hands can shame cars 3 times the price with twice as much power! You shouldn't get rid of yours.
Nice posts oliverj.

What books did you buy? Quite interested in learning some new skills.

It cost me £600 for the day at Donington but I have never done anything before and always wanted to. It broke down to £150 for use of his M3, £250 for his time - he was up at 5:00 to get to Donington for 7:30 and we didn't leave till 18:00 and £200 for use of the pit lane and we had our own garage too! For that I got 40 minutes lap time in every hour for the whole day!

You could definately tell the drivers on the track who had tuition and those who were self taught. When it started raining you could see who had skill and who were relying on the in-car electronics to keep them on the track. One lad in a Saxo came off in front of me, spun round across the grass and smashed into the wall by the dunlop bridge - it was like being on tv it was amazing but I did feel sorry for him.

I missed the free track day offer from Seat and ended up with the Traffic master Satnav!

Hi JonJay! Embarassingly the first one was the highway code (my tutor told me that you can get out of 95% of stoppable offences by quoting the highway code)!!! The others were Roadcraft (official police training manual) and 'How to be an advanced driver'. I got them all from Amazon for very little money.

He told me to read a bit and then practice and once I have accomplished that I should move onto the next task. It could take years but it is something i really want to do. Who needs an RS6 or an M5 when you could out drive them in a LCR just by having the right skills!

I was speaking to the head of Seat Uk in november at the opening of Seat in Aberdeen and he said that they will not be taking out a new 'R' due to the lack of a market for the price they would have to charge. From the horses mouth so to speak.

After some technical studies, it would appear that the MK2 Cupra is indeed quicker from 3rd gear onward.
I can vouch for that;)
Well got a good chance to test the MK1 LCR v's MK2 cupra
AND..........

Handling wise there is a huge difference between the two, this was 'tested' in the dark on an unfamiliar road but even with me having S3 strutt brace, neuspeed ARB 28mm the difference in handling was very obvious.
As for speed I think we need more testing on this;)
but initially it seems that at about 80 MPH+ is where the extra power seem to take the MK 2 ahead
This I'm sure will be a sudject to be added to but I was very impressed with the MK 2 cupra. When you see it going around corners it totally loses the 'people carrier image'
Big respect to the MK 2 it truely deserves the cupra badge

I prefer the look of the new Cupra to the LCR. It just looks a lot more modern than the now dating LCR shape. I just always get the impression MK1 owners are kidding themselves a bit really, it IS a better car :)

Still, the interior is FUUUGLY, and I love my LCR to bits (when it's not breaking).
The mk1 LCR is just before the time hot hatches started getting big and peoplecarrier-ish, still looks modern but looks sharp instead of bloated.

Oh and Evo mag said the Cupra lacks the adjustability of the LCR.

Sheesh, must be true then :p. Must take mine back to the Stealer and buy the Honda then despite it having 60bhp less, 2 doors less, smaller brakes, gawky looks and common as muck status :D
Leon R not Honda R!

Please keep the chavvy Honda out of this ta :p

cupra

hi all
been reading thread on new cupra against old cupra r,thought id add my view on it.Was offered a long test drive in new cupra by my seat garage salesman, who was hoping to sell me one while mine was in for a warranty job, anyway firstly looks, well its not as aggresive as id hoped, they should put the body kit thats an option on other models on it as standard,it just doesnt look different to other models, interior, well the seats are very supportive and good, ive got recaros in mine and i would say they are as good if not better, although dont know how theyd feel after driving 300 odd miles, some of the trim is err, well cheap,i know they have to cut costs somewere but the trim just doesnt look or feel quality.next the drive, well the engine power delivery is very smooth,it seems a bit sluggish lower down the rev range but pulls really well from around 4000 rpm to the rev limiter,id say it was about the same as my cupra r when the engine was standard, although it put the power down very well in all gears,it didnt sound as good as mine though. The handling, again at first it felt average but as i got a bit more speed into corners it felt very safe and flat, and was more composed across uneven road surfaces than mine, dont think it was any faster round corners, just felt safer, whereas mine feels abit more on the edge, brakes felt good, plenty of stopping power,i think ftting brembos would have been better though,i think they offer more power, and look the part too, again, dont know if this was a cost issue, brembos must cost a fair bit more than something pulled out of the vw group parts bin.So overall, well not a bad car, would i buy one,at the minute,no,if they were to make it look more sporty then i would really consider it,all of which i told told the salesman, and he said this is what most people have been saying on the feedback,i think ill wait a year or so till the R version comes out!!!.Anyway it felt good to get back in my cupra r,which is far from standard.

Nice post. As a former LCR owner I was wanting the new Cupra to be special, but quite simply it isn't. I still can't get over the MPV looks and the interior is very , very cheap with harsh shiny plastics all over the place. They could have done a much better job with the front end and added a splitter to give it a more agressive look, but sadly it won't turn any heads. It's not really rated by any of the car mags as well. It may be slightly faster than the old LCR but I wouldn't really want one.

i dont think i said the brakes on the new cupra were bad did i?,but there is no way a single piston sliding caliper is going to out perform a big 4 pot brembo caliper, the brembos have more clamping force in my opinion, and they stand out and make the car different.

I read somewhere (on here I think) that the Brembo's were initially fitted to the MK2 Cupra but were found to be inadequate, so the brakes from the R32 were put on instead.
