Since owning this car back n october 2009, it never seems to be as quick as i'd expect it to be, so hooked it up to VAG-COM today (cheers EZ Tutty), and got the following fault codes :

17748 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Incor. Correlation

16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Retard Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)

Now after a bit of reading it seems to indicate that either the Camshaft position sensor is at fault, or the timing is out - however as its a 54 plate car its never had a cambelt change:confused: (at least not one I have a receipt for)

Can anyone shed any light on these fault codes?

Cheers

What oil are you currently using? (viscosity).

CEL came on with the same intake camshaft (over-retarded) error code when I was using a bit too thick oil for the winter.
The cam chain tensioner did not like it and the code came up.

For the 17748...
The solenoid is located on the side of the timing chain tensioner.
If the solenoid is busted, you cannot purchase it separately. A new timing chain tensioner is around 600£+ mounted.

You can check yourself if the solenoid is ok or not.

Ignition off.
Extract the connector -arrows- of the variable distribution system valve -N205-.

Measure solenoid valve resistance with a multimeter.

Spec is 10 - 18 ohms.

Under or over -> busted.
