Hi all wondering has anyone tried putting a shim on there o2m box?

browsing different sites the other night and found some useful information out on clutch creep.and whining noises from the o2m boxes.

There's obviously shims which get put in by gearbox specialists but this little mod is dead simple.

Cost me £10 for parts from vw
Takes about 15min's to do.

Mines an FZQ box on a 2004 plate

It only applies to later boxes which have a black round cover on the end.

Remove cover and behind u will c the end of the input shaft with a bearing surrounding it.
Theres a snap clip which needs to removed then put shim around, pull shaft towards you and reinsert snap clip. Easy job and seen as a must have to all o2m boxes.

Going to do mine tomorrow and will post up the outcome.
Wish me luck.

£10 fix compared to a £300 gearbox what a result.

Problem solved not a whine or crunch anymore this should be everyone's no1 gearbox mod. For the sake of 10 quid in parts it has saved me 100s

Part no for anyone wanting this are as follows.

WHT-001-976 for the shim..
O2M-301-211-B for the black end cap.

U will need the end cap no matter what.

The gears select perfectly now and is a pleasure to drive.
Good luck guys

04. I'll have to check I've got a gearbox with the black cover but it should be. Just got to wait for the weather to cheer up a bit.

These parts are for the end of the gearbox they attach to the end of the main input shaft directly fed from engine. It stops the shaft from travelling back and forth when u accelerate and decelerate which causes the whine which most people are getting.
If your not getting a whine then I would do this anyway before any damage can occur.
Available next day from any vw dealer just ring and order part numbers above.

I will post the link to the Web page I got this info from and u can see for yourselves.

So chuffed I really thought my gearbox needed replacing.

Yes mate just remove passenger side wheel.

Remove or pull down black cowling at the front of the inner arch and u will c the black cap.

Please note this is for 2003 models onwards.

What about earlier models? Got some slight whining when engine breaking in 1st-3rd and accelerating in 6th. Nothing annoying but, hey, gotta keep busy in my spare time. ;)

Any cheap and cheerful fix for that on a 2001?

Sorry mate its a full rebuild for yours. If I were I'd look for a 2nd hand newer type box. Look for an FZQ good box used in cupra and cupra r's.

I've just stumbled across this thread, a weekend after fitting a new gearbox to my '05 1.9tdi 150 fr for a whining noise in 5th gear over-run (off throttle). Am I right in thinking this £10 repair would work on a FMH 6-speed box?

Does this work for 05 cupra r? Some pics would be really useful as I have whining on engine braking, really bad in 1st gear more than others.

Then I'll leave it alone. It will probably run another 100k without a hitch. :) You have to really know what to listen for (and turn the stereo off) to even notice it so it's not a big deal.

Yeah I bought mine a few weeks ago, after 100 miles it started whining. Ain't no more though.

In regards to the tdi fmh box yes this would of sorted it. Go grab your box back do this and fire it on ebay.

Mine whined like mad in all 4 forward gears. Shim job stopped it.

If u look on vw vortex there's loads of stuff on there.
It's amazing what u can find out from other people's info.
Figured that a 10 quid repair was worth a shot before having to remove box with extra expense.
