I honestly think you're the first head gasket i have heard of since being on here, bloody bullet proof.

Yeah the skimming place will check it first i'm sure.

Yes, the garage said it was very uncommon, said they had done a few VW ones, never a Leon.
Siad it can be down to an impurity in the gasket or an inherant weakness.

I don't really know what they look like, thought they were just a sheet or cork!

It seems that most of the cost is labour for this job.
VAT as well, which I guess would have been worse if she had waited till January to spring this one me!

OK confirmed head gasket, most unusual apparently 1K confirmed as well. I said go ahead just got to pray they don't find anything else.
Once its back and running I need to make a serious choice about what I do! Do I sell it off and try and buy something more reliable? do I keep it and try and recover the nearly 2K I have spent on it since I got it?

Or what, open to suggestions.

if its just headgasket, then once replaced you should'nt have problems thereafter..
unless it was driven and got very very hot which would have damaged things.

My HG started leaking oil out the back of the engine, replaced now - seems OK. Would of given it a crack myself really. Without sounding bad you could of done it for 200-300 with all the parts they've quoted. Cyl head may/ may not need skimming although if it hasn't been changed on a car with 60+k I would of thought it would probs need doing. I paid £30 for this to be done anyway...

i must admit i,ve only ever seen one vag engined car with a definitive head gasket gone.

costs you should be paying are:

around 8 hours labour (time for the head gasket is just short of 6 hours)
oil change
flush

Parts:

oil
coolant
gasket set
skimming
timing belt kit, inc w/pump (might as well while your there)

A grand quite frankly makes me laugh, who owns the garage thats doing the job? **** turpin?

 I am sure I must seem really stupid but this is the price I have been given to change my shagged Leon back into one that I can drive again :-(

Not much choice given the fact I needed to take it close by and need it back before Xmas.
The garage is Milestones in Bognor Regis well Felpham and has been there for years and years.
They got the car today, switched around thier work shop to accomodate me and say they hope to get it back to me Friday.
They are always choc-a-block busy and seem to have a really good repuation around here.
JKM said they might be able to look at it and then tell me if they could find a day to do it if they could, so by the time I'd paid to get it there, bring it back and take it back again for when they could do it I'd have been paying out loads again.

They are into it now so I don't know what else I can do.
If the car would just stop having faults for a few months maybe I could get some use out of it :-( sorry well stressed about all this

even 10 hours labour @ £40 per hour is only £400 plus £400 (if they're gold plated) on parts thats still only £800, are they a delaer or just very over-priced?

at the dealer i previously worked for the labour rate was £65 per hour, the specialist i now work for charges £40, i'd eat my own hat if i was paying an indy more than £50 an hour, unless they were bloody good.

That set aside a thousand pounds for a head gasket replacement on a 4 cylinder, common as muck, run of the mill car is still through the roof for any part of the country.

have you actually had a written quote for the work? with a breakdown of all the processes involved and charges that are relevent?

That will come at the end, he said they need to see if there is anything else needing doing and could not tell that until it was stripped down.
In the past they always phone even if its going to be just a few ££s more than what they said.

See for a thick O like me, who can't do the work himself and does not move in motoring circles what chance do we have, just have to trust that a local well known company would not risk ripping me off and damaging their business.
Other than that I have no defences other than what you good chaps can tell me here.
I don't want to pay 1K either, in fact I can hardly afford it.
Just as well I cancelled Xmas due to all the bereavement I have had recently.
FFS when does it end.

Hmm I know sell the Leon, much as I love it

i think its about time we let this one go as a slight mistake but as long as the car comes back and work is done to a very high standered on time and runs like a dream thats all that matters and other users will read this and learn from it. hope it all goes well for you
