WORSE and WORSE

Just had a call.

The head is fine but the block is worn and as such can't be repaired.
I really don't understand this, how can it wear its only five after all.

Says its 3 thou out and as its a metal gasket it would be no good.

New engine is my only option.

How do I do that?

Garage says he will not do anything until I get back to him.

Sometimes when the Headgasket goes, the coolant can run against the engine block, therefore pitting/channeling it slightly. (if I remember correctly)

I know on the Rover K series engine, this is quite common, I seem to remember people using metal filler on the engine block and rubbing it down.

If I were you I would take this as a good opportunity to strip the car down & maybe upgrade to a Cupra R? - If this isnt viable then it may just be simpler (and cheaper) to source a replacement engine and have it dropped in.

I think the engine is the answer.

OK question is at what point do I give up with this car?
If its been driven so hard and bad for just 60,000 miles then what else could be screwed up?

Brakes, ABS sensors, radiator all been done.
Got JKM to drop the gear box oil and renew and check what came out, said it was dirty but no noticable swarf.

Is this car worth about £2K of work?

Or should I scap it

I know what you mean, I am contemplating if its worth changing my clutch as thats £700
MOT is up in January, I think I need a new caliper at the back and a set of discs and pads, and then the tax is the end of Jan.
Added to that I am only 6 months away from cambelt and water pump.

It gets to the point of is it worth spending £1400 on a car I paid £1700 for only 4 months ago, or do I see what I will be offered as a part ex and put a bit maybe £500 towards something with 12 months MOT.

Mine had a new clutch about a month ago.
I am kind of leaning towards getting a brand new bottom block from seat £1300 includes pistons, pumps etc total cost ones all done would be about £2800 :-( but then apart from the gear box which seems fine there is not a lot else that could go wrong, or is there?

Either way I think my days of Leon ownership are very numbered.
