By removing it and seeing if it stays closed, when it should open up.
If it is going back to the header tank i'd say the pump was fine.

By removing it and seeing if it stays closed, when it should open up.

Whils the stat is out you can put your fingers in the block and feel the vanes of the water pump too 
aint got the tools on atm to do it all so i think its the painful way of dragin it to seat an getting them to do the whole lot i.e thermostat water pump an cambelt any body got an idea how much there gonna rape me for this ???
