Oil question

Sorry for what might be a dumb question.

I've been sold by my Seat dealer a litre of oil. It's quantum Long Life 5-30. I bought the car with 5000 miles and it is set for long-life.

The car is a petrol 1.8TSI driven mostly start-top.

I want to have my car changed to time/distance and I'll take it to the Seat dealer for the stamp.

The car will be one year old in a month. My question is, would it be better to cancel my appointment for the car's first service (swtichover to time/distance) (1 year), but instead leave the car in long life, and have the oil changed by an independent mid-way?

I believe that oil for 18 thousand miles is too much and that's the reason why I've thought of having the dealer set it to time/distance. But if I could save a few bob by just going to the dealer for the long life and do a change in an independent mid way. Not sure, any thoughts?

I do wish to take it to the dealers at least once every long life to keep their stamps and their good will if something breaks down.

Also, can you top of for oil consumption using long life oil if you are running non-long life full synthetic? I remember that one shouldn't mix mineral and synthetic oils, not sure if it's the same for long life and non long life?

Also, I've always been a fan of Shell Helix Ultra. Which one of these two is the recommended grade for a 1.8TSI?

I'd leave it at long life and have a independent do a oil change mid way as you said. No point paying a premium at the dealer's for a simple oil change.
And put the receipt for the oil change in the service book, helps to show you look after the car

Yes you can add long life to non long life oil if topping up, obviously not the other way round if your cars set up for running the long life servicing schedule.
Unless it's an emergency, then Seat allow you to add a small amount of non long life oil to a car on the long life servicing schedule, but only one time

Around 4 1/2 - 5 litres of oil for an oil change, someone who's done one on the 1.8 can probably give you the exact figure or it may be in your owners manual

When you say which grade of the two oils you listed, you do know they are both the same grade I.e 5/30 ?
Or do you mean which is better, if they are both vag approved then chosen which you think is better
Sorry if that's a bit vague, but I couldn't get the shell oil links to work for some reason, so can't see the specifications

The first year service is much more than just an oil change recalls software updates, diagnostic, tyres wiper all the other checks and 1lt oil in a nice case but still not worth £180.

Yes, dealer service prices are a rip-off. I recently paid £250 for what turned out to be an oil change, oil filter change, fuel filter change, and pollen filter change. That can't have taken much more than an hour by a competent tech. They didn't even change the air filter. For the sake of £10 I bought an OEM air filter and changed it did myself afterwards (took me less than 10 mins). Yes they do a health check on the car and any software updates but again, that's no more than 30 minutes work.

I would just leave the car on a long life service schedule and do an interim oil change yourself (or at an Indy) as suggested. It's what I intend to do with mine which is also currently set to a variable long life service schedule.

My FR is on long life as well, but I've already done what you're thinking of doing. A full oil and filter change using SEAT approved oil and filter cost me £75 at my local garage. They only charged £15 of that for labour so the oil is quite expensive. I'm not happy leaving oil in a car that's still fairly new for 20k miles, and it certainly doesn't do any harm changing it every 10k or so.

Thanks for all the good info.

Sorry but I still failt to graps the longlife.

When you go on infotainment --->car and then maintanence, there are two values occuring at different mileages. So does this mean that if I keep the long life service I'll have to take the car at those two intervals (They are apart by 4000 miles or so)?

One will be the oil change interval and the other will be the inspection service interval. Inspection services are usually due every 18,000-20,000 miles irrespective of when the oil change service is done (be that a variable long life schedule or a fixed 10,000 mile / annual schedule).

Yes, unless you've pre-paid for a service plan which I believe should cover it. You will need to get all the oil and inspection services done when they come up if you don't want to void your warranty.

As there is only 4000 miles difference then you may find they will do both the oil change service and inspection service at the same time when the first one of those two come up. It is worth asking. They would then reset both SRI counters during that dual-service.

Yeap, I didn't prepay the services, that's one of the reason why I'm trying to figure out if keeping it in long life with an indy change mid way or having seat change and do the tine/distance.

I'll ask for sure!

Whats the difference between the oil's then?

tbh I don't think it's so relevant now, as dealer's use the same oil for both long life servicing and fixed service schedule, but in the past they used to use different oils, they did on my Golf
Maybe more relevant for cars serviced outside the dealer network

who knows, it says about it and mixing oils in the hand book, tbh I didn't really think about it I just posted it for completeness as the op asked about mixing oils
But your right there is probably no difference in most cases now :)

Changed oil yesterday. Whent for motul 8100 x-cess 5-40w and oem vw filter and oil plug.
I made up my mind to skip long life service because i want to change oil at least every 9000 miles.

For this prices goiing time/distance with Seat makes no sense. I'll deffo keep it in long life and will do an indy oil swap mid way.

Time to order some Shell Helix Ultra!

Just find a VAG independent specialist. You don't have to use a Seat main dealer. Long life service is circa £120 Incl VAT with a local Audi specialist.

100%, the whole thing with the thread was for me to understand a bit if long life or time/distance was better.

I'll be doing an interim oil change with an independent and will keep the long life with SEAT as I do wish to have their stamps on the service book in case there's ever a need for goodwill.

I think you need to use oil Motul specific 5-30 504.00 / 507.00 Generator sets that we are choosing our country.
