Sounds like bull to me cause all FSI means is how the fuel is injected into the engine.
Well the 1.6 will pull steadily and smoothly throughout the rev range. The diesel however will always have torque on tap thanks to its turbo but the acceleration dumbs off the further up the rev range you go.
Engine is reliable apart from the flywheel is riveted on if i remember correctly and after high mileage the rivets can fall off and fall into the gearbox. However I cannot confirm that the mk2 leon 1.6 suffers from this as its only something I read about on MK4 golfs. Im sure one of the leon guys here will soon confirm if the 1.6 flywheel uses rivets.
The 1.6 is reliable though but I can see you struggling to get 40mpg unless you do alot of motorway miles.

i dont do hardly any motorway, just commuting to work and small trips, you reckon this will average out about 35mpg or so.
Pulling power is important for me, for round about situations and junctions, currently with my car is i have to quickly get her into 2 or 3rd to get some speed and momentum on round abouts.
you dont really get far on 1st unless i rev her over 3.5k rpm.
is the leon engine more responsive and powerful particulry on pulling power even with passangers on board.

i drive a Seat Leon 1.6 Stylance Sport. There is noticeable roadnoise at 70 on motorway but it was not too intrusive. my car has 225/17/45's on it. you will probably have the stereo on anyway and not notice. My dads focus isn't much quieter to be honest. there really is very little between them. As for power i find it fine. As a 1.6 hatch you dont expect supercar performance but it pulls very well. I have driven a 1.2 clio (my sisters) and the Leon is a nice step up. If you can at all try get cruise and the armrest. cruise is invaluable around speed cameras. I had driven practically every 1.6 small hatch and leon is by no means underpowered compared to them. Economy wise i get about 37 mpg with a mix of motorway and around town. Stylance spec has everything you will ever need!

how much did that cost yyou dont mind me asking?
Yes i would have the stereo on as i would othersie i sleep lol, some cars for example the mazda 3 the cabin noise is pretty high when you hit 50+. with the clio as you nitce its still relatively quiet at around that speed. but when the motorway comes you can really hear that engine exert its self and fair bit of noise in the cabin.
the focus are noisy in my expereince but i think the clio is quiter, i hope it pulls better and perform better than the clio mate and you would know as you drive both?
so the leon compares well to the mazda 3 1.6 and other 1.6 in your opionion altought it has the 8valve engine?
i was lookiing the sports ed based on the refrence which has no cruise or arm rest, but the stylance ticks all the boxes but will love to have the sports interior and seats.
i think thats a decent milage for the engine tbh, and yes the stylance is nicely speced which is why i like it except for no sports interior which i cant find, would be nice to have the automatic lights and rain sensors. but it does have the trrip computer and parking sesnsors etc.

the engine does rev pretty high. I live in the ROI so the national limit is 62 mph (100km/h) and the engine spins at about 3000 in 5th. it does spin about 3400 revs at 70 but the road noise drowns it out to a large extent. the Stylance sprot is a stylance with 17 inch alloys, the red sports seats (excellent) and sports suspension. my car is firm but things get better as speed rises. i dont have any rattle issues with my car. there is an odd one on a bumpy road but it nothing repetative so i presume its belongings in the car. it is very well screwed together. i do however tend to take it easy on bumpy roads. i really do lookk after it. compared to other cars, its def as quiet as a mazda 3 (prob quieter), slightly more road noise than a focus but less wind noise, about the same as a golf/octavia. the 8v engine is fine. you will find it pulls very well. i am very picky about my cars and can only find 3 things that could be improved (subjective i know):
1) climate control buttons are a tad too small
2) ride is firm in town (but the seats do make up for this to some extent)
3) the road noise is worse on the 17's than the 16's...but it looks fantastic with the 17's.
If i were you i would def go for the stylance though. the extras make the car and you can waft along smug in the knowledge that you saved a fortune over a golf!

the clio enfinee revs between 4-5k on fifth gear doing 70+ mph.
i,m worried about the road noise tbh mate. i do like the stylance and i,msure if i look hard i can get the sports verion thats the one i would want for the right price hopefully. thats great to know that these seats are screwed together. i hope they are nothing like the renaults i just worry everytime i go over a bump.
the mazda 3 is bit noisy mate in the cabin specially when u reach 50+ mph, i was hoping the leon is better insulated and keeping the sound out. i drove the refrence and found the clutch was vibrating pretty bad which put me off but it could be just that one. the ******* sales man wont let me get it more than 50 something about speed limit. he lost my business at that point.

my price will be in euro's and due to vehicle taxation in Ireland the price is much higher than the equivalent. i bought mine a year and a half old for 19500. maybe if you just got the normal stylance. it is a bit smoother, quieter and the seats are pretty good also. any leon will be quieter than a clio though. horrid little cars...bar the hot versions...the best thing to do though is drive the different versions. if one dealer isn't forthcoming with a proper testdrive there are plenty more that will...

Ibizas are really firm. Going by what you have written above I think you might want to consider golfs as they are smoother, quiter and use higher grade materials for the interior.

You seem to be a bit iffy aboput the Leon. a golf will be smoother and have slighly better interior plastics. if that is your priority have a look at one of those. but the only way you will know for sure is to drive as many as you can and decide from that.

Well for me I would choose a leon over any other car in its class. However I get a feeling ATI has different needs to what most traditional SEAT buyers have. If it wants the sportiest natured VAG car at a reasonable price then SEAT gets the nod over VW and skoda, however ATI wants comfort, a nice interior and a smooth quiet ride. From my understanding a VW golf is much more suited for this task and therefore costs extra money.
