The handle works fine. It's the doorlock itself which is out of place. I haven't had time to have a look at it yet but I will do soon. I'm hoping it's a quick fix and I'm not in need of a new one. If I do have to get a new lock will this mean I need a new ignition barrel too?

the whole barrel/lock mech can be swapped over from the passenger to the drivers side, so its probably wiser just to do that if there is an issue with the lock in the drivers door. just means that the issue is moved to the other , not used as much side

I have driven a mk2 on 13'' 15'' and 16'' and 17'' wheels (yes I have a slight wheel problem) and although 17's looked ok they were a pig to drive with a decent drop on the coilovers!
The ride was harsh and bumpy compared to the standard 16'' wheels.
As for the door lock problem I have had the same and it's just a case of getting the kit off eBay and swapping the barell over.
Rust is an issue, took me 9 cars before I found my Cupra with no arch rust, and other cars I have looked at since have been terrible!
Don't want to put you off though, they are great fun and with some tweaks I'm sure you'll have fun in yours too!

what they're saying mate is, the whole barrel is attached to the handle, if you take the handle off (the working side, i think it was your passenger side?) then take your broken barrel handle one off, and compare, you'll see straight away!
then put the unbroken handle on the drivers side, and voila, you don't have to walk over to the passenger side to lock lol (its annoying isn't it, people think your weird lol)

then when you can be arsed go to a dealer and get the barrel and spring and put on the broken one!

I have just bought a Seat Ibiza GTi 8v. (R reg)
As you would expect It wasn't exactly in supreme condition. There are a few things wrong with it and as it's the first car of this type I have owned, I have no idea where to source parts and how much they will cost. Most of the stuff is just trivial but I'll list it all anyway.

Things that are wrong:

Rear wheel arch rust (both sides)
Handbrake/Gear lever handles worn.
Driver side door lock out of place (I can only assume it had been broken into).
It has 17" Wolfrace wheels but there is ALOT of rubbing. Any tips on the best size of wheels would help.
ABS light is on but I got the car with a years MOT?

I think that's all but if I find anything else i'll post it up.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Handbrake and gearlevers can still be bought new, last time I phoned my friendly local dealer the handbrake handle cover was about £40 for the leatherette GTI one, poverty spec models cover a fair bit cheaper. TPS may do them for about a fiver less than a dealer if you give your local branch a ring.

My car came with 17'' Wolfrace wheels and drastically lowered suspension, I had no rubbing issues at all (lots of suspension bottoming out issues instead). Changed to 16''ers and Eibach springs and now all is rosy(ish).

that's not fair, my 8v doesn't have ABS!! *stamps feet*although at the mo,it doesn't have fook all brakes really, hehe. i obviously got the one made when pedro was feeling stingy or is this another gti vs cupra sport debate?? :D

1997/98 seems to be the year when they messed about with the brake specs. Most but not all of the R reg cars I've ever looked at didn't have ABS (talking 8v's here). Mine has no ABS either. Mechanically it's one less thing to worry about, driving quickly on a wet road it's one more thing to worry about!!!

Cheers for all the helpful responses concerning the doorlock guys, much appreciated. My friend and I are going to do the handle swap tomorrow. Knowing my luck i'll end up with no locks :p

its very simple once you have a go, i went to the dealers, and put the new spring/barrel infront of the mechanics, they we're like "we can do it for you, it'll only cost you £15"
less than a minute later (with them watching) i jumped in the car, drove off lol

i got some quotes from dave atr seremotors for some bits, the leatherette gaiter being one of them and he does some nice prices :) ;)

Give us a hint of £££ as I could do with a tidy spare one for when mine finally wears completely through.
Yes, I could ask him myself but I don't like bothering him unless I'm actually ready to buy something, though a particularly cheap price usually twists my arm in the wallet direction. :D
