Having a very stressful week, so I put a little petrol in my car today I'd say about 2 - 3 liters about 3 - 4 seconds before I copped on, there was already a good bit of diesel in it - up to the first mark on the gauge and I put more diesel in up to about middle of the gauge, had to drive home and it was fine but should I brim it now or get the tank emptied.

OK Hopefully you have diluted the petrol enough not to do any harm, but today's diesels cannot have petrol in them like the good old IDI engines of the past. The stuff is seriously harmful to Common rail engines, and I believe its not advisable in these PD engines either, as petrol damages the rubber seals quite quickly, so f..king up the pumps to start with, and other parts as well.

I Note its an altera? so it could actually be using CR system, so be careful,as it does not take much petrol to damage the rubber seals and cost you a forntune to fix......

call me a donkey, i filled my pd130 up with unleaded, er, i mean from like on the red to the brim. got a mile down the road and enginge cut out at 70 on dual carridgeway. aa got it home. had to drain most then filled it up with advanced deisel. sounded like it had a hangover for a few minutes then took it for a steady drive and was fine. change the fuel filter after another tank or so though!!

They say its does it good...

I'm always very dubious of anything "They say..." Who are "...they..." anyway?

Lucky for you you only put a small amount in.

gio is spot on: today's diesels are nothing like the old IDI engines where you could throw owt in and it would keep going... You will always hear of folks saying "I did this and then this and nowt happened..." - sure, some folks are very lucky and some folks go on a denial - but what is really happening / has happened amid all the pipework, seals and injectors under the bonnet...?

If you ever suspect you may one-day put the wrong fuel in, get a little sticker and bung it under the fuel-filler cap. A few pence could save you many dollar. :)

Most seals in modern diesels are hydocarbon resistant to a high degree and will cope with petrol just as well as diesel. There are problems with alcohol based fuels and seals though.

I did this yesterday, put 1.5 litres of petrol in and then nearly had a heart attack when I saw what I'd done, filled it with diesel, about 40 litres so I'm hoping it'll be ok, drove for 105miles after and it was fine. I guess I'll just keep topping it up with diesel, and hope for the best.

Think theres still a bit of petrol in mine and I've brimmed it three times now, car judders occasionally when driving along but all good. One of the neighbours from around the corner was charged 600 euros due to the same thing, damn feel like I've had a lucky escape.

markmeus.... hay, remember a little while ago lorry driver used to put a little petrol in with the diesel to stop it freezing in the winter, it wont harm it. i'm no mechanic though i've been messing with engines since i bought my first motor bike when i was 11 yrs old. it's mainly the silicon in diesel which fouls a petrol engine but diesel as a whole will total trash a petrol engine which is why the diesel pumps in filling stations can't be inserted to the newer viehcles petrol fillers cause of the damage caused. they havent bothered doing the same for diesels because they're so robust... like me. lol.

Good to know! I was a little concerned with it being a new common rail engine, however in the grande scheme of things it was a very little amount of petrol. It's been running fine since, so I think I got away with it.

Still can't belive I was stupid enough to do it, I've had the car 5 months! lol - guess I was just a bit tired and not thinking straight. And i always used to wonder who were these people who put the wrong fuel in their cars! lol

btw please don't go filling ya diesels up with the local petrol just for the hell of it to save a couple o pence a litre and then try sue me if anything does go wrong (you will break down!! i did when i put a whole fill, (yep 45 bl**dy quid down the drain) in mine. couldn't sell the petrol on cause contaminated with diesel. (another 100 quid for recovery). it'll run if a bit contaminated but wont on 95% petrol. forums are here for thoughts and comments are they not.

and no, i didn't pour it down the drain that's just figure of speach so don't bother getting the environmentalist on to me either. crazy world of litigation today... as you can see i'm scared to open my mouth.
remember the good days when diesel was about 2/3'ds the price of petty??? whatever happend to that. darn governments.

Haha - I definitely wont be doing it again, oddly in Ireland diesel is much cheaper than petrol, however my time in Dublin is coming to an end and I'm moving back to the North next week, so I'll be back to speed limits in miles per hour and diesel being more expensive than petrol.

rofpmsl.... yeah rite, quote a past comment of my own.... "what kind of idiot would put the wrong fuel in their car... probably would have to be a member of the opposite sex on a mobile phone with a fag in their mouth n doing their hair all at the same time" lol (not sexist as as far as you guy's/gals know i could be either sex so again don't try sue me!) disaster waiting to happen. then i went and done it myself, mind you i was in a hurry, leggin it from the coppers when i got a bit of a lead i popped in for a pit stop at the the nearest BP for munchies. they didn't catch me till i broke down. lol. jk
