Exact thing happened to mine, somehow the pipes were swapped over and when the fuel cap was released I got covered in fuel for some reason, swapped them over as per DPJ post and all seems ok now.
Could this have caused any damage to the carbon canister or anywhere else?

No, unlikely. The carbon canister should dry out.
